It may be worth keeping an eye on Sharpness Drydock as both of their latest purchases visited there for maintenance and associated name change work.

I inherited a few thousand black and whites (mainly of ships in the South West of England taken in the 50s-70s) from my Dad when he died and I have had a few of them published and still credited under his name since his passing.  I think of it as a tribute to his memory.  As the current owner of those negatives/photographs I suppose I could have some claim to their copyright but prefer to ensure the actual photographer is still remembered.

Best regards

I'm not 100% sure but I think UK copyright exists for about 70 years after the death of the original copyright owner, unless it was sold on or whatever.  As the site has been in existence for about 20 years and assuming the images uploaded were by live copyright owners at the time then that would mean they still have at least approximately 50 years to run before the question of automatic public domain can be considered.

Best regards to all,

Tom

Have you tried looking on the site: https://hec.lrfoundation.org.uk/

Digital versions of some LRs are available there and I believe 1913 is one of them.  Both copies are listed for that year, steam and motorships and sailing.

Looking at ShipAIS' history option, it would appear that she was 9166467 (MMSI: 236644000 - GIB).

I have no other confirmation, but have no reason whatsoever to doubt that site.

Hope this helps,

Finding all OK on both Edge and Chrome.  I always shutdown over night so that would have cleared any local cache problems should that be the issue.

Cheers

Hi Allan,

I've had the same issue for much of today but it is now working OK, I've added a summary of what I did on the Home Page Problems conversation which seems to cover the same thing.

Hope it is of some consolation that you are not alone with this issue,

Best regards

Hi,

1) I've had a DNS error every time I logged into the home page using Chrome all day.  I was searching for something else using Edge and it gave a direct link to the photo of the ship I was looking for.  On the Edge session, I clicked to go back to the home page and it worked OK.

2) with the Edge session running in background, I went back onto Chrome and still got the same error so I copied the home page URL from the Edge screen and pasted it into the Chrome screen and it worked successfully.

3) I ended the Chrome session and since then have been able to get straight back in successfully.  My theory is that the error page was activated earlier today and was possibly held in cache which I accessed each time I tried to get to the home page, and by re-typing the url manually I managed to clear the issue here.

So it may be that others need to manually enter the URL to get it working, or it could be that I was just lucky.

I hope this helps,

Thank you - keep safe and well,

Tom

Looks like BURHOU now south of Portland (UK) with AIS showing ETA Vilagarcia 16:00 Jan 02.  Her present course could indicate a call in the Tor Bay area around sunset, possibly sheltering.  My AIS shows Panamanian flag, call sign HO7618, with a mmsi of 355369000.  However the IMO I'm picking up is showing as 7726900 which is an invalid one, which may of course be an issue with my system as MT still shows her as 7726897.

Best regards for the New Year,

As this title contains 'Historical Photographs' I thought I would add a cautionary tale.

In the period 1950s-1980s my father was a photographer in business in Teignmouth (U.K).  He would take photographs of ships at the local port and because of UK Purchase Tax law was only allowed to sell to ships crews or shipping related companies.  A couple of years ago, I found a copy of one of his photos on a Dutch Coaster website, not credited to him.  All photographs sold were stamped on the reverse side with a copyright stamp but of course the act of scanning does not record the back of photographs.  I contacted the site concerned and was told that this issues was under the remit of a US company that maintained the site content.  When I contacted the US company, they said that they would change the details but only after I had sworn an affidavit in a US court.  Obviously I did not pursue this.

Experience with other sites has often worked well, usually I offer some additional info on the actual photo circumstances to show thanks.

I have several thousand photos taken by my father and myself, but not uploaded them to any site because I find that the copyright issue is too stressful to resolve should someone choose to violate it.

Even so, some photographs still find their way into books published by reputable publishers, mainly because they are wrongly advised that someone else holds the copyright.

Best regards for Christmas and the New Year, keep safe and well,

Tom
