You probably know that the River Fal boat trips pass through King Harry Reach with good views, but viewing from the landside is also possible at Tolverne. If you cross on the ferry and turn sharp left halfway up the hill (on the east side of the river) the road (built by the US troops during the war) can take you down to the pub at the bottom, and you can get opposite the ships, depending on the tide.

Can you explain what the 'top level' forum is for if not shipping news? I tend to just look at the home page when logging on and not drill down to other parts of the forum and probably miss out on information of actual shipspotting interest or the chance of contributing. Is the level that you access on log in just for things like copyright issues, links to videos, and discussion on the qualities of photos submitted please?

As far as I know, the research ship TRITON and the three reefers SWEDISH REEFER, HELLAS REEFER, and NEDERLAND REEFER are currently laid up near King Harry Ferry on the River Fal.
The large lng ARCTIC DISCOVERER has been anchored in Lyme Bay for a few days, presumably for orders.

Just looked at the DIAVLOS PRIDE from the cliffs at Teignmouth. She is out in Lyme Bay 16 mls SE of here and has a barge with container cranes on it. I'm presuming that as she came from Antwerp it would be part of the de-commissioning of the MSC Home Terminal at Delwaidedok.

I usually looked at this facility when other sources did not provide the information on a specific ship as an additional resource. Most of my interest is to provide voyage details for my photos taken on trips and often not researched until several weeks after. Most of the sites I use are limited in their historical content, but that is probably available at an extra charge. I upload my own AIS data (for Lyme Bay) to Liverpool as their historical info is more easily found.

I was looking at the port history element which is displayed when a particular photo has been selected and this seems to be out of date in a number of cases (i.e. not updated since April and the ship is still trading in areas with good AIS coverage).
I may have missed something discussed in a previous forum subject, if so apologies.
Has anyone else noticed this please and has there been an explanation?

I find the simplest way to safeguard pictures is:
1) copy from card to your computer, and retain on card for a specified period - I tend to keep for 12 months.
2) back up from the directory/folder which contains the pictures to a 'transportable' disc (backup disc), making sure that the backup disc is sufficiently big enough to hold three copies of the backup.
3) after the third copy has been backed up to the backup disc, delete the oldest, and continue this cycle on a monthly, six monthly or annual basis, whichever you think is appropriate.
4) if you can afford it, you can extend this strategy to using more backup disks, rotating them.
5) try and keep one of the backup disks at another physical location.
Using this method you should be able to restore from either the original cards or the backup if required.

Have you made sure that the "Show Vessels Names" box is ticked?
This can be found by clicking on the Layers icon on the left-hand side of the screen. That icon is the fourth one down. The box you need to make sure is ticked is right under the longer "Map type" box.
Hope this helps, but you may have already tried that. Sometimes after a PC hang, this box is unchecked when you start up Marine Traffic the next time.

Trip reports / Re: Shipspotting in Malta

Last year I visited Malta for the first time and stayed at Sliema. From there I got a boat trip (twice) of Valletta/Grand Harbour with (I think) a company called Lazzu. I was recommended to use them because they operated smaller boats and could get closer in the smaller creeks. The trip was extremely interesting and as soon as the boat skipper realised that I wanted to see/photograph as many ships as possible, he definitely earned his tip!
The same company also operates a trip from Sliema to Marsaxlokk for the Sunday market which takes you past the main container berth. On the day we went we had an onshore breeze and so kept out to sea when passing the south of the island which gave me good views of one of the inner bunkering anchorages.
(I should state here that other local cruise operators also exist).
I really enjoyed my time there and hope that you do,

I have often seen containerships listed with times for Hansweert, these times are also close together and merely indicate that the ship, usually in transit from Antwerp, passed that point on the Schelde at that time.

The companion book to 'Ocean Ships' was 'Coastal Ships and Ferries' compiled by David Hornsby also published by Ian Allan. Although published about five years ago, it may still be of interest to you but as the title indicates, tugs and miscellaneous craft were not included.

On previous occasions I have seen tankers alongside large carriers anchored at Spithead/Stokes Bay. I was informed that they carry 'waste' from the carriers for processing, often to Marchwood.
