I was hoping to make her leaving the Forth but might end up driving down to the Tyne instead! Get some night time shots ;)

I HAVE TO PHOTOGRAPH HER before she is made into a fancy retail space.. :)

Tug lift operation ready to begin

The operation to lift the tug which sank in the River Clyde, claiming the lives of three crewmen, is scheduled to begin later.

A lifting barge will move over the Flying Phantom which is lying in about 30ft of water near Clydebank.

The step-by-step nature of the operation means it is expected to last until at least Thursday.

The Flying Phantom ran aground and capsized without warning while towing a freighter on 19 December.

The barge, GPS Atlas, which is operated by GPS Marine and is capable of lifting 400 tonnes, has arrived at the King George V dock from Belfast.

The river will be closed at 1000 GMT for six hours to allow it to manoeuvre into position above the tug.

After divers have attached cables to the vessel, the delicate lifting operation will involve it being raised then turned a number of times before it breaks the surface later this week.

The tug went down in the Clyde during a docking

The ebb and flow of the tide around the location near the mouth of the River Cart is expected to play a part in determining the duration of the lift.

An investigation is continuing into why the Flying Phantom sank without warning while it was working in freezing fog to guide a freighter to a dock on the Clyde.

The bodies of the three crewmen, skipper Stephen Humphreys, 33, from Greenock; Eric Blackley, 57, from Gourock; and Robert Cameron, 65, from Houston; were recovered later.

A fourth man, Brian Aitchison, 37, from Coldingham, was rescued from the water.

The Flying Phantom is owned by the Danish firm Svitzer and was based at Greenock.

VESSEL ABANDONED AND DRIFTING MID CHANNEL

At just before midnight last night it was confirmed to the Coastguard at Brixham that all 20 crew had now abandoned the `Ice Prince which has is presently drifting and listing at 40 degrees to port. The stricken vessel has some navigation lights showing and some partial upper deck lights.

Twelve crew, including a 41 year old Greek national with a broken leg, were airlifted by the Coastguard helicopter late yesterday evening to Portland whilst the RNLI Torbay and Salcombe lifeboats took off the remaining 8 crew.

All were dressed in life jackets and immersion suits. A few minor injuries were reported in the evacuation of the vessel including bumps and bruises. The crew taken off by helicopter have been found some accommodation in the Torbay area whilst the injured man has been taken to Dorchester Hospital.

The French Coastguard tug Abeille Liberté is now on scene and has taken over from the warship `Cumberland in standing by the vessel. There are no plans to try and put a line on the `Ice Prince by the tug until first light this morning. The crew of the tug are reporting to the Coastguard hourly on the vessels condition. Some cargo has been lost to the sea but in the darkness it is unclear as to the quantity. The French Coastguard is broadcasting warnings sea area to alert other shipping.

The sea state locally is reported to be a five metre swell with winds gusting to force 8.

The Agencys counter pollution team has been alerted that 313 metric tonnes of intermediate fuel oil are held in bunkers on board the vessel. The Agencys on duty Counter Pollution and Salvage Officer and the Secretary of States Representative in Maritime Salvage and Intervention are closely monitoring developments, and a decision on the fate of the vessel will be made later today.

Earlier yesterday evening Brixham Coastguard had received an emergency call that the general cargo vessel, the Greek registered, 6395 ton, `Ice Prince was in difficulties mid channel. The vessel was plotted to be 35 miles south east of Start Point.

The vessel which was heading for Alexandria has 5258 metric tons of sawn timber on board which has shifted and the ship was listing at the time to 25 degrees.

Salcombe and Torbay RNLI all weather lifeboats were immediately requested to launch, and an emergency pan pan signal was broadcast into the area by the Coastguard warning other shipping of the `Ice Prince and her predicament. This signal was also picked up by the warship `Cumberland which stood by the Ice Prince throughout the evening.

The Ice Prince is reportedly rolling heavily in the very poor weather.

The Master informed the Coastguard that he also had a crewman who was in need of urgent medical attention after he had broken his leg in the darkness on board the vessel. A Coastguard rescue helicopter India Juliet from Portland, which had been put on standby, as the incident unfolded was immediately scrambled to the vessel.

Wonder if it's anything to do with this? I'd imagine security would be less in a general cargo area compaired to oil/gas loading areas.

As a user of a SR162 i can thouroghly recomend getting your own AIS recieving equipment.

I currently as many others do share my data from my location to Ship Plotter COOA server so others can view my data if they have a registered copt of the software.

Ialso share my data to a free website call AIS Liverpool which provides good coverage of the UK. (live to public)

In regards to Worldwide your a bit limited, there is:

SiiTech Web Vts Web that has some coverage in Canada and the world (live to public)

Vessel Tracker which has some coverage in Europe. (delayed 1 hour for free account)

AIS Live some world coverage on paid version , free mostly Europe and very expensive for live coverage (free to public available but least one hour delay on free, limit to areas shown, no search ability etc)

AIS Live must be in bed with the goverment to restrict it's use so much and it's cost.

Things always happen for a reason may it be a member of staff or a Passenger .. and seeing the number of pasengers to staff statistically it would more often than not be a ppasenger. Staff as they have come in contact with so many viri in the course of thier duty are more likely to have sutable defenses against most common bugs.

As for the gel situation - The genral public are thier own worst enemy.

Such a sad incident. My thoughts are with the families and the survivor over this festive period.

The local paper has stated there is a salvage team/vessel being sent from the Netherlands around the start of the year, would anyone here know which vessel this may be so that it can be tracked on AIS to Glasgow..

Yeah sorry i can't help but that message is totally scary.
