I have just visited www.nsri.org.za to see an article from a link on Vessel Tracker and was surprised to see what appears to be a photo taken by me and posted on Shipspotting.com on 30 October 2010. I have asked nsri for an explanation.

Shipping News and information / Re: Barrow in Furness vantage points

Bob,
No response after 24 hours so I will try and help. I used to live there many years ago.
Barrow is on the mainland and there are basically 2 islands off the mainland. The first island is known as Barrow Island and there is a bridge located more or less adjacent to the town hall that leads across to Barrow Island. As you cross this bridge you will see to the right the new assembly hall for submarines, you may be lucky and see one though some details may be covered. On the other side of the bridge you may be lucky and see some surface ships.
There is also the possibility of going on to the main docks which can be reached via Ramsden Dock Road. Have a look at the Google map of Barrow-in-Furness and some of this should make sense. You will probably not see much from the second island, Walney, but there is a museum re shipbuilding and submarines in what used to be a graving dock on what used to be called the low road.A final thought, the locals are friendly and I am sure they will be helpful if you stop and ask.

Thanks for your help everyone.
Sad for me as I stood by her in the builders and did the maiden voyage. I was also able to visit whilst in Southampton 35 years later.

Does anybody know for certain the fate of the Margaret Hill?
I saw on AIS that she was heading east in the Mediteranean on 17th December 2009 and there was talk of her going to Dubai for conversion into a re-liquification or storage vessel.  I kept my eye on AIS around Dubai for a while with no news but I did hear from some source that she became SS Chill and was possibly going to India for demolition. Any definate news would be welcome.

Lauderdale, an ore/oil carrier of around 280,000 tonnes, regularly transited the Malacca Straights in the early to mid 1970's. There are a couple of places that she had to pass at correct stages of tide and one of these she actually had to stop her engines and drift across as there was only about one meter between the bottom of the ship and the seabed. Hope this helps.

Have a look at the website for the Iranian Oil Tanker Company:- www.nitc.co.ir where there are scale drawings of all their tanker classes together with machinary inventories and other bits that may be of interest.   :-o

Christian and other interested parties.I was interested in finding your forum yesterday as I had spent the last few months searching the web for photographs of the ships I had sailed on in my younger days. It took me some time to find pictures of what in my day was LNG Challenger as the ship had gone through a few name changes.
I was one of two junior engineers who stood by the vessel's building in Moss Rosenburg's Stavanger yard and sailed with her from Savanger on 21/10/1974 when we proceeded to Canvey island to load some LNG for cargo trials after which we sailed to Bahrain arriving on 22/12/1974. I left the LNG Challenger supposedly to join another new build LNG carrier being built in France, but between me leaving Bahrain and arriving home the french ship deal fell through.
I had a realy enjoyable time both in Stavanger and on the LNG Challenger, which I thought was a very well built ship. This seems to be borne out by the Singapore refit of what would have then been a 26 year old ship to enable her to take on a charter for the next 18 - 20 years.
I have a couple of photographs of LNG Challenger in my day which I can post if there is interest, but be warned they are old and amateur and were intended for my memories.
