Hello everyone,

it is a while, since I was contributing to this site. I was doing so, for some years and with a great pleasure. The even bigger pleasure was the community here, I met some fellow members and it was generally a very good atmosphere on this site.

It was also worth to look up ships data and keep track of ships ports as well.

There were shipspotters who just did it for the sake of fun, often a few from the same port. Of course it happened then, that 5 people posted same photos of the same day, the same port. But nobody did really miind, as everyone has a unique way to take photos. The community feeling was the most important thing.

Then, the ships data disappeared, I therefore did not step by here so often anymore.

Then, there was always an arguement about "why so many photos of the same ship" and "post quality not quantity".

I really got tired of that, because shipspotting is actually just going to your port, and take photos of ships, even with fellow shipspotters and share them there. Of course not the ship that comes here day by day, but after all, the landscape lets say along river Elbe is not so exciting and not always so special ships coming. But, still nice to post them and share them.

Also, take in count, some people travel a far way to see ships (like me in the past).

I do not like this discussion, I would like to see the whole attitude here going back to where we started - an easy going bunch of people, enjoying their photos, and enjoying other shipsspotters community and make contact in real life even.

Then, I noticed that some culprits are linking their photos externe somewhere, so just to gain hits and hits to get to the top three. And, we do not talk about special ships here, not the newbuilds or the scrapped ships from Denmark! We talk about rather bad quality photos of not any special good situation. Just link them for the sake of linking, not because they are special.

Whoever these people are, it would be good if they get a warning by the webmasters, to behave in a social way and stop such doing. After all, we are not community and not "like that".

I noticed as well, that the owners of the site do not give a sh... about above mentioned stuff, and the webmasters seemed also not to be listened to. I do not like that!!!!

Instead, there are stupid adverts, which have neither to do with shipping nor with travelling and worst of all:

During post few days I get some very iffy pop-ups in Russian language and some real trash pages open! I do not want that!

I will attach a picture of that trash, and I do not want to be bombarded with that. To be honest, such things are for me a real reason to stop uploading photos here and rather share my photos on facebook with people who are really interested in that.

I really hope, there will be a change, as I would like to return here, after a clean-up.

Of course it could be I am totally wrong ... :p :p :p After all, I have been away for a while. But I would like to hear your thoughts about this topic. For the meanwhile and under current situation I will not upload any more photos to my collection here.

with regards,

Cornelia

Help and Advice / COPYRIGHT Infringements on FACEBOOK Ship-Lovers
« on: November 25, 2014, 02:05:03 PM »
Hello folks,

I came across a site from facebook, named "Ship-Lovers"

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ship-Lovers/512232695535502

The owner of the site, who is not named, does pick photos from sites like FleetMon and possibly shipspotting.com too, and upload them.

The tricky thing is: Watermarks are removed and replaced with his own watermark.

I have found already few photos where I have verified, this has happend.

Check yourself, if you find some photos, and you can report that to Facebook if you want, or inform the site owner.

Greetings,

Cornelia

Help and Advice / Adding IMO Number after posting photo does not work.
« on: March 29, 2014, 10:11:48 PM »
Hello,

I have uploaded photos of

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2004087

without IMO Number because I did not find. Someone helped me, so I did, what you usually do:

You edit the photo, you get the message that the photo was successfully edited (there was no problem filling in the correct IMO-Number) and when it is done - the number does not show up and the system did not take my modification.

I never had this before, as I done this before, so I think, there is a technical problem.

Asking for help here, thank you in advance,

Cornelia

Trip reports / Visit onboard "Urho" Finnish icebreaker
« on: September 18, 2013, 03:18:25 PM »
Visit onboard August 2013 during summer holidays in Helsinki (Katajanokka)

Thanks to 1st officer Tapio Tammento and Ms. Pia Broumand.

Some basic info:
The ships are laid up for summers, but for 6 weeks maintainence work is going on. For 4 weeks, each ship is entirely closed, but only one at a time. Ships there were: "Voima", "Urho" ("Sisu" was for repairs at Tallinn/Estonia) "Otso", "Kontio". Kontio is now also equipped as an oil-recovery vessel. The company "Arctia" also plans to add these facilities to their other icebreakers. More here: http://www.arctia.fi/oil_recovery

Going onboard, to the bridge. Some info:
 http://www.arctia.fi/en_urho

There was not so much time, so all plans etc. were photographed quickly.

Visiting ships officer where all kinds of paperwork is done, ordering spare parts, proviant etc. and an extra cabin which is not used. Colors still 1970 style.

The ship is named after the ex. Finnish president "Urho Kekkonen". A photo of him and a book for special guests. The ship was used and is used also for VIP-meetings. Although, nowadays if you have a conference/a party, you can call at Arctia's "event manager" and rent the conference-room, as well they serve food.

 http://www.arctia.fi/events

Only in Finnish, but it says that one can rent the facilities onboard "Urho" and "Sisu" and as well have gastronomic service from

 13.5. - 28.6. und 5.8. - 29.11.

Sauna, messroom (one for officers, one for ratings), library, fitness-room and - a swimming pool. INSIDE - of course  :)

Engine room, last photo shows the equipment that is used for pumping water from side to side to make the ship move when it is stuck in ice. This ship has FOUR screws, we went only in the engine room to the forward. There was alot of repair going on, and all was extraordinary clean.

The above mentioned conference room, and - it has also modern art.

The time was running, we went outside to see the giant winch which is used to tow vessels in case there are difficulties to follow the ship.

Finally we learned, that "Voima" will be sold or scrapped, and  that "Arctia" is going to replace it by another conventional (not multipurpose!) icebreaker.

I hope, you enjoyed the read,

with greetings from Germany,

Cornelia

Help and Advice / BREACH OF COPYRIGHT
« on: December 27, 2012, 03:23:25 PM »
Hello everyone,

today I found out, that a website is using my photo of "Josephine Maersk"

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1144417

http://www.osm.no/index.php/osm-news-arquive?start=30

There are also other ship-photos, which may be taken without asking for use and without naming the one who has copyright, so if you like, you can seek for your photos, and do what you want with what you find.

I myself wrote them a mail of complaint.

Wishing everyone a good time, but dont let disturb cases like this, the pleasures of shipspotting ;D

Greetings from Drochtersen,

Cornelia

Hello all,

I've done it again ! Booked a cargoship-voyage, duration 10-11 days. Outgoing Rotterdam, via Kiel-Canal to Helsinki, from there to Kronstadt near St. Petersburg in Russia, continuing to Klaipeda and further, via Skagen to Teesport and Rotterdam, where my voyage has ended, me taking the train back to Basel then. I'd like to share some impressions from the voyage with you, please enjoy !  ;D

Ship was the 2007 built "Aila" by Sietas in Germany, owned by Langh-Ships Finland, chartered by Containerships. Crew was solely Finnish, I was the only passenger. Out of 13 people, 4 women onboard including me, which was a nice experience. Excellent Finnish food, clean ship, and as it goes, including all you can expect from such a trip.

cabin, and view backwards

welcome-drinks, and some info

few photos on River Elbe below

tht's the ship which went into the sunset

Kiel-Canal, and going to Helsinki

Arriving Helsinki, no possibility to go to city, because 500 m terminal bus, cost 20 Euros (rip-off !!) Instead, taking photos of harbour-scenes.

Going to Kronstadt, no berth available, so at anchor, together with many other types of ships, you see everything there !

Finally arriving, immigration came onboard, and me off to the city. No terminal bus, walking it is. Then, walking more, and to a bus-stop, Taking a bus into the city. Bit of an adventure, if you don't speak the langauge apart from very few words and ability to read kyrillic letters. Remembering the name of the street I walked through, helped on the way back, which was by private car. Picking up people who are waiting at the bus station is, what is done there, sometimes. Was for free too, guy didn't want any money, and collected also other folks from bus stops.

A shop was open, and I had to try some icecream, local products. Both not worse than any Western product, was with blueberry-taste and vanilla covered with chocolate.

Here some images from Kronstadt:

Trip reports / Trip onboard Museumship "Greundiek" to Hamburg
« on: May 19, 2011, 07:25:24 PM »
The celebrations for Hamburg harbour birthday from another point of view, this year, namely from the water side, to avoid all the masses of people blocking just every way in the city.

I had booked a trip from Stade to Hamburg on the 1950 built museum-coaster "Greundiek".

The trip started early morning 07.30, at the old port of Stade, where there are also located a few other museumships.

More infos on the ship, in German:
http://www.landschaftsverband-stade.de/greundiek1.html

Because pictures say more than 1000 words, I won't use many words here. Enjoy the pictures, ask questions, ask google or any other search engine of your choice :-)

Ship gets turned, and down river Schwinge

looking back

River Elbe, and one of the new container giants just passing by

We were overtaken by few other ships, of course was useful to have the camera ready.

At noon, there was a parade of museum ships in Hamburg, for the celebrations of the harbour birthday, which we joined.

We didn't berth anywhere in Hamburg, but there was plenty to see in the different parts of the harbour.

We were back around 18.00 in Stade.
Was a perfect day trip, and the whole thing not expensive, at 35 Euros per person :-) Food and drinks were available onboard as well for a moderate price.

Of course the trip was also with "Sound" as here provided on the website by someone who has done a similar trip  ;D

Hello all,

in November of this year, I did visit the museum coaster MS Jan Dirk. It was very interesting for me, to see a ship like this, from decades ago,  which used to trade the routes of nowadays containerfeeders. As well, it was even more interesting because the ship is very much still in the original state, how it used to be, when it was still in service.

Now, the community, restaurating the ship has got a new website which you can view at

http://www.ms-jan-dirk.de/

But not only they have a new website, they have also uploaded more photos, and they have interesting plans, for activities in 2011 like attending http://www.flensburger-dampf-rundum.de/Dampfrundum/dampfrundum.html

Now,  they hope to have some more photos on their website, and if you have any photos of the coaster, the webmaster of the website will be happy to put them on the site, of course copyright credited !!! ;D

Greetings,

Cornelia
