Hi Tore, in case you wish to stay in Ijmuiden, then I always stay here:-
http://www.hotelprinsenhof.com/ijmuiden/hotel/index.html
It's clean and well run but there is no private parking, however, I have always found parking within a few metres.
There are lots of good locations for photography in and around the locks & port itself.
Regards, Rick

@Tore: When in Hamburg and when lots of ships are coming into the port on a late afternoon tide, it pays to drive some 15-25 km down the river. This helps you in two ways:

> you gain 1h of daylight, since you meet the ships 1h earlier
> the ships head on a more southerly course, so you have better light late in the afternoon

places to check for late afternoon (incoming) ships:

Hi Tore,

Hotel de Beer is a good choice. It's on the South bank adjacent to the N15, giving access to Europoort, Botlek and Rozenburg turning right and the Maasvlakte when you turn left. Nearby is Rozenburg, where the "Landtong" gives you a good view of the tankerberths of the Calandcanal as well as the New Waterway between Rotterdam and the sea. The end of the Landtong is opposite Hook of Holland. The fast ferry to Maasvlakte and Hook of Holland berthes there as well. Mind you: a lot of hotels here are booked to capacity because roomspace is needed for those who work at the construction of Maasvlakte II. If you'd need an alternaitve, please advise.

Rob.

Hi Tore,

I specifically pointed you to the south bank of the river simply because the sun is in your back when taking pictures.

At the end of the Maasvlakte you'll find Slag Maasmond where all ships pass for Maasvlakte, Europoort, Botlek and smaller port areas. By contrast, Hook of Holland is on the North bank and vessels to the Maasvlakte do not pass there.
I already gave you some info about the Landtong Rozenburg. Rozenburg is a former island, now a part of Rotterdam with abt. 12.000 inhabitants perched between Botlek and Europoort. East of Rozenburg you'll find the Botlek, but unless you know the back alleys it's hardly possible to take a decent picture. In the city of Rotterdam you'll find the remaining containerports, the Waalhaven and the fruitterminal.

South of the Europoort/Botlek area, on the island Voorne-Putten, there are two historical towns: Brielle, which was the first to be liberated from the Spaniards during the 80 years seccession war in 1568. And also Hellevoetsluis which was a naval base until Napoleon put an end to it, preferring Den Helder because it was not so close to Great Britain. There are still remains of the citadel incl. the oldest graving dock on the continent. Om the north bank, opposite Rozenburg you'll find Maassluis, known for it's tugboat museum and other maritime venues.

As alternative hotels I could suggest the Bastion Hotel in Brielle (www.bastionhotels.nl) alternatively the hotel Rozenburg. (www.hotel-rozenburg.nl)

Have a good trip and please do not hesitate to contact me for further info.

Robert.

Hi Tore,

There's also a bed & breakfast called: "t wapen van Marion in Oostvoorne, don't mix up with the Hotel with the same name.

Cheers Fred
