Tugs & Harbour Craft In Rotterdam
« on: October 07, 2009, 11:11:47 AM »
I will be visiting Rotterdam on my way to Germany by rail via the Harwich ferry. I will have one day - without car - etc to view/ photograph what I can before moving on early evening. I am interested in tugs, ship handling & harbour craft.

I have google mapped the post codes of the tug companies but there doesn't seem to be any concentration of tugs there.

Best places to view please & how to get there?

Chris

Hi Chris,

Go to the little harbour in Hook van Holland the first tug you  can see is the Smit Japan,
In the same harbour go with the Fast Ferry daytrip 5 euro,s ,The fast ferry will go to the Landtong and he will pass the Scheurhaven that the place where all the Smit tugs are.
If you go further with the fast ferry he will go to the Maasvlakte in the beerkanaal on the left you can see the Fairplay towage and some big tankers and containersships
Than go back with the Fast Ferry to the landtong and stay there thats the best place

Regards,

Dave

Dama,

Thank you. That sounds ideal.

Do you have the full map reference - Google Earth - for the Maasvlakte ferry stop?

Do you have the same for the Fairplay dock?

Chris

Hoek van Holland Berghaven, Scheurhaven,(Smit) Tenesseehaven (Fairplay) and way into the Europahaven.
They're not that  difficult to find with www.maps.google.nl
Search for rotterdam, scheurhaven or one of the other harbours and it points to what you are looking for. Change to satelliteview and you see 3 Smit tugs, the others are out on duty ;-)

Cheers Fred
