Marti Princess&Renate Schulte collide in Aegean Sea
« on: June 29, 2009, 07:26:32 AM »
Marti Princess (Imo 9519377) and Renate Schulte (Imo 9057147) collided off the Dardenelles Strait near Bocaada Island on 27.06.2009  22:00
The Malta-registered Martı Princess was on its way from Turkey to France with some 8,000 tonnes of cement and the German-registered Renate Schulte was sailing from Morocco to Tuzla shipyard near Istanbul.
Nobody has been injured or died...
Very interesting accident on open sea
regards

Hi Ilhan

Amazing photos - just how can this happen with all modern navigation aids?

It happens for exactly the same reason that thousands crash their cars every year - exhaustion, carelessness and incompetence.
Looking at those photos it appears the Schulte ship could be in the wrong, regardless it's going to be expensive...

Renate Schulte clearly in the wrong. As I recall the when two vessels are approaching each other on a collision course the vessel with the other vessel on her starboard side has to give way. From the pics it seems that this might have been a night time incident. RS clearly hit MP on the port side at 90 degrees and at full speed so it seems that no attempt was made to alter course or reduce speed either action would have avoided the accident.

I very much doubt if the MP could stay afloat the damage looks to be too severe I guess it depends on how much damage was done to the bulkheads either side of the point of contact.

RS will have had all the latest Nav. aids but without anyone watching them and interpreting them correctly they are just so much useless junk. I would have thought that there should have been at least two people on watch, the Officer of the watch and a lookout. These two ships must have been in site of each other for some time before contact.

More information would be help full.

Both ships are stable, but still entangled in each other. With the help of ballast water the bow of the RENATE SCHULTE is to be raised, so that the MARTI PRINCESS gets free. This may still take some time.

understand that both vessels are still stuck together and drifting.
bunkers of Marti Princess are presently being removed order to
avoid possible spillage when "MP" and "RS" will be separated.
A spokesman of Managers of "RS" allegedly said that the officer
of the watch tried to contact "MP" on vhf, but in vain...
( he rather should have tried to avoid this night-time collision by
drawing the right conclusions from his radar and ..taking action !)

It's not so much what they're being taught at college, but what they're learning from the usual 'United Nations' of a crew...

Haha !
this reminds me of a nice and true Navy incident that happened quite some ages ago...all on vhf:
"that ship three miles off my bow, give way"
no reaction
"that ship three miles off my bow, give way !"
"NO"
three seconds silence...pfff
"that ship two miles off my bow, you must give way !!"
"NO, YOU DO"
"that ship, off my bow - we are very big US Navy aircraft carrier SARATOGA, you must give way now immediately !!"
"AND I AM FASTNET ROCK LIGHTHOUSE, YOU BETTER ALTER COURSE" .......
that's US NAVY
