Fire on giant trawler Athena out of control
« on: July 08, 2007, 05:45:48 PM »
On Wednesday a fire broke out on giant trawler Athena.
Only a safety crew was left on board the ship, they were able to prevent the fire from spreading. Nobody was injured.

The trawler headed by own power for Talcahuano, Chile.

Today the owners, Ocean Group Faroes, report that the fire is not under control anymore.
The owners say that the trawler is lost.

This happened after firefighters from Chile had joined the  safety crew on board, and had started tackling the fire.

I'm not sure if the trawler reached Talcahuano before the fire got out of hand.

There is nobody left on board now.

Here a picture of Athena from before the fire.

I cannot read Spanish, maybe someone who can is able to find out if Athena is at Talcahuano, Chile.

Is she a sister to the Vigo built HERCULES which was gutted in fire some weeks ago? Quite bad for the shiptype if she really is...

Yes.

I think that this is the 3rd or 4th boat of this series to have gone on fire.
