Any New News On the Napoli
« on: March 22, 2007, 08:39:41 PM »
Hi,

Although I live in Devon there appears to be a total lack of news about the Napoli now, anyone know how the salvaging of the containers is progressing and what will happen when that is complete

Cheers

Alan :-D

Hello Alan.
Latest report (per 20.03.07)
Naval Architects were onboard the vessel yesterday. The Architects have been looking at the structure of the vessel to decide how best to remove it. They advise that it may be possible to re-float the vessel to tow it away, after all the internal cargo has been removed. Although weather dependent, the salvage crew are working towards a deadline of having removed the internal cargo by the end of October.
Skimming of oil from the surface of the water in the engine room and Number 6 Hold is continuing
The crane barge Big Foot is continuing to remove containers from below the vessel's deck. Good progress was made over the weekend and yesterday, with almost 60, 20 and 40 foot containers removed.

The MSC Grace, the vessel that is transferring processed containers from Portland Port to Le Havre, is due to arrive back at Portland at the end of this week.
The National Trust reopened the western end of Branscombe beach last Friday. The event went well and was well attended.
The Contractors have removed the previous stockpile of waste from the compound at Branscombe. They are continuing to sweep for debris washing ashore with the tide, and will dispose of the submerged containers when located and brought ashore.
Best regards
Bj

The deck containers have been cleared through Portland. Contrs are opened and if cargo looks ok they are sent to le havre and then onwards as intended to SAfrica. Any with damage are just being set asisde for now. The clearing of containers off the deck of MSC Napoli went fairly quickly but the discharge is much slower now as they are working in the flooded holds. this means divers have to attach lifting gear and also cut away cell guides. many containers are full of water too so moving and lifting them out from a listing contr ship is slow work. The assement of damaged containers will take most of the year probably!. Portland doesn't really have the quay space or gear to have proper inspections or to unstuff the caroes for salvage or restitution.

On the MCA homepage there is a photo showing the progress of salvage operation.
I don't know when the photo is taken. It looks like the have salvaged half of the containers.

About half of the containers on board have been discharged including all the deck containers. Progress is steady but slow. The holds are flooded and so are the containers under deck.lower tier containers are under water so it takes time to attach lifting gear. Following inspection at Portland sound containers go forward to Le Havre for onward shipment. there is a big build up (getting bigger every day) of containers with damaged cargo still inside awaiting further inspection restitution or salvage disposal. Portland is not really big enough to do anything except store them or send them on. Offers are being sought for removal of the wreck once all containers are off. Still a long time ahead.

Hi all, spent my hollidays in France and came across a magazine named Navires & Marine Marchande. Was able to obtain the numbers 31 and 32, its a trimestrial. In number 31 a story of the Napoli disaster is placed. I found these series of magazines very interesting and well provided with good illustrations. In number 31 all about Methane tankers and the Methane market can be read. All of it is in French, don't know if other languages excist.
The publisher has many books about all kind of ships. For more www.marines-editions.com
