I just read on Discovery News about a rather intriguing project going on in California - a group is working to moor a used cruise ship in international waters right off the Silicon Valley coast, and retrofit it to create an international coworking space there for high-tech startups. The plan is to have 1000 entrepreneurs live on the ship by Q3 2013. Story is here,

The article quotes a cost around $30M and I'm thinking it would have to be rather large to be stable in the Pacific chop near San Francisco, so maybe a laid up ocean liner? A decommissioned aircraft carried would serve them well, but I don't see one becoming available before Q3 2013. Jack-ups would be stable, but too small.
