Shipping News and information / Re: Sad state of affairs!

Certainly in most of British Ports there are a group known as 'Apostleships of the Sea' where they do ship visits and help seafarers from across the world, regardless of belief, nationality or rank in cases like this. This I understand is extended to around 300 ports around the world which is linked to 'The Stella Maris' organisation. To my understanding they help out in this sort of situation with the supply of food, clothes and mobil phone 'top ups' . .A good service and all are volenteers.

It's difficult to believe how this could happen especially with a Harbour Pilot(s)on board and most media reports suggesting that there were 2 escorting tugs . . However the AIS tracks only show a stern tug escort 'GENUA' (IMO 91637380) unless of course there was another bow tug without AIS, which is doubtful.
Its all very sad and condolences go out to the bereaved families.

Shipping News and information / Re: Tug sinking off Torbay
« on: January 19, 2013, 10:32:46 AM »
Today the THV Galatea was over the sunken wreck of the 'Emsstrom' possible for extra survey work possibly because of the outcome of the meeting that took place ealier this week in Torbay chaired by Hugh Shaw (Secretary of State Rep for Maritime Salvage & Intervention) and attended by all interested parties and being reported a possibility of the vessel to be refloated because of its dangerous postion. (the vessel is laying very close to the recognised Deep Draughted Anchorage for VLCC and also very close to the westbound approach to vessels landing 'Deep Sea/North Sea Pilots' at Brixham Pilot Station, plus the fact that the vessel is very close to the Southerly approach and waiting area for vessels entering the small commercial port of Teignmouth.

The area is also popular for small Commercial Vessels/Tugs with Tows that are Biscay bound that take shelter to await a suitable weather window . . .as the 'Christos XX11'herself was doing at the time.

  Ted,
So sorry but the link seems to not work, but if you go to 'you tube' and just tap in the box, emsstrom there are two video's listed  . . one is the possible grounding, the second one is the 10 degree list appearing and the return to the berth.

It's interesting to note that there seems to have been problems in Leer when the 2 harbour tugs were bringing the 'Emsstrom' away from her berth into the river to transfer the tow onto the 'Christos XX11 . . .it appeared that the 2 harbour tugs were struggling against the strong tide and it appeared that the 'Emsstrom' went aground, were as an additional harbour tug was called upon . . . when she was eventially refloated and was taken out into the river to connect to the main tug, it was evident that the Emsstrom had developed an approx 10 degree list and was brought back alongside another berth for reaccessment.

If you go to youtube and tap in, emsstrom there are two video's listed . . one of the possible grounding and the second is of the 10 degree list appearing and the return tow back to the berth.
(the direct link i posted did not work .sorry!

Once again Fred a great video especially the 'Dawn' shots . . .the colours were amazing.
Thank you & regards from Torbay uk

(Did you think the 'Fair Play 21' had a slight problem with the forward towline . .quite a list to starboard on the approach to receive the heaving line from the 'Vale Minas Gerais')

'Kingswear Castle' will be operated by the very sucessful Dartmouth Steam Railway & River Boat Company on I beleive a longish charter.

She was built on the River Dart in 1925 at Philip & Sons Yard at Dartmouth and plied her trade on the river until 1965 and at that time could carry up to 500 passengers (not now of course)

On 29th March she will depart Dartmouth on her 'Homecoming Charity Cruise' and all proceeds will go to The Paddle Steam Prservation Society.

ex Pride of Dover (delivery name 'DOVER')being towed by the anchor handling tug 'Eide Fighter'is presently 95nm NW of Malta, making 6.7SOG.

So if this is the case i am rather confused why the ex 'Pride of Calais' has been renamed 'Ostend Spirit' and has left Tilbury under her own power, steamed to Ramsgate and now in Oostend and achieved a speed up to nearly 18 knots,it all seems a little strange.

Thanks for your welcome information Capt Ted and your personal views regarding Public AIS which is very fair comment. Cheers
