Hi folks,

I'm looking for the name of a vessel, (if it's even been built yet!).

The following is an excerpt from a report from the MarineLink editorial:

"North Star has secured a contract with energy utility giant EnBW to deliver a new hybrid-electric service operations vessel (SOV) on a decade-long minimum charter to service the He Dreiht wind farm off the coast of Germany. The newbuild is of VARD 407 design which has been tailored to meet EnBW’s specific requirements.he high specification vessel includes Voith Schneider eVSP propulsion and is prepared for the use of methanol as a fuel.

The ship is also fully equipped with a height adjustable motion compensated gangway and 3D compensated crane. In addition, it utilizes the best available technology to support decarbonization, including North Star’s Decision Support system.

Scheduled to start long-term charter with EnBW from the end of 2025, the walk-to-work vessel will provide accommodation for up to 34 wind technicians as they maintain the development’s 64 wind turbines, located around 90 km northwest of the island of Borkum and 110km west of Helgoland.

The SOV will also act as a logistics hub and warehouse, the UK's leading SOV operator said."

My mate has a job on an OWF off the coast of Denmark/Germany and is awaiting deployment. He's been told it's state-of-the-art.
We're thinking it could be the BOKA OCEAN, LES ALIZES or this new hybrid one.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Site related news, functions and modules / New category.
« on: November 12, 2023, 10:53:41 AM »
Hi Forum,

I think this is worthy of a mention.

I believe that a new Category is in the offing for the site. Something a little off the cuff perhaps but still to do with shipping nonetheless.

I've just been watching a 4 minute clip on YouTube from the movie The Italian Job (Self Preservation Society) and at 0.53-0.54, Michael Caine is seen at what could be Dover/Harwich or even on the European side at a ferry terminal with a ferry loading in the background. The movie was made in 1969.

Perhaps a category for Movie Ships (actual) for vessels that are seen in the background. Whenever I've seen vessels passing in background I've always wanted to know the name(s) and there are plenty of TV/movies out there. 'The Streets of San Francisco' for one which as we know is as well known for its port as it is its name.

Just a thought,

Regards

P.S. Just looking at the Italian Job vessel, it could be this one IMO 6506317, which is really interesting to see in her new guise

Shipping News and information / British registered bulk carriers
« on: November 09, 2023, 10:53:06 AM »
Hi forum,

Ive just been looking at Vessel Finder and observing the traffic anchored off Kamsar, Guinea. The majority being bulk carriers. I wondered if there were any British bulk carriers (home port/flagged). I'm not sure Ive ever seen any thinking about it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Forum,

I've just noticed a couple of problems while I'm editing a photo. I've not noticed it before.

When I've ticked the box for IMO number and then edit the Location box, the drop down list for ports stays on the screen and it unticks the IMO box.

Frustrating & time consuming when you have to keep going back to it.

I'm using Safari 15.6.1.

Regards,

Hi Forum,

My last photo I uploaded of LNGSHIPS ATHENA is visible to me and every time I click on it, it shows up in red in the top right corner, "This photo has been deleted" and yet I can clearly see it albeit with no views.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Hi Forum,

I stumbled across the new ships section a few weeks ago. Now I can't find it.

Ive just been superficially looking at the web page Statista, which gives figures for ships around the world by type amongst others.

What is a "Dirty" Panamax vessel? Also a "small dirty tanker"? Does this relate to emissions?

I'm sure I've seen a photo on here that someone took of the fat Airbus plane passing over a container vessel but I've just been looking at someone who post's under the name of "Anchor's Sway" on Facebook which looks the same.

Help and Advice / Lens aperture.
« on: January 10, 2022, 12:43:09 AM »
For ship photography, I'm looking at a lens with at least a 300mm focal length but unsure what size aperture I need or would be a minimal requirement.

Also, what sort of lenses are others using? I've seen a couple which may be compatible with the camera but there are a lot of different manufacturers. One that keeps coming to the fore is Sigma.

Help and Advice / Lens filter vs hood
« on: December 29, 2021, 09:26:12 PM »
Hi Forum,

I'm looking into buying a lens for the camera and noticed on some photography sites they're pushing to sell a lens filter too. If the lens hood reduces flare across the lens due to stray light, why would I need a filter? Seems like overkill to me.

Regards and thanks in advance.

Site related news, functions and modules / AIS Database Error
« on: July 20, 2021, 08:17:59 AM »
Hi Forum,

I'm experiencing an anomaly when viewing a vessel. Upon clicking on a photograph to view the particulars, the photo loads but then no information below, just the message "AIS Database error". Doesn't happen with all photo's though. Maybe its my server because it takes an inordinate amount of time to load.

Shipping News and information / Massive respect to all pilots out there !
« on: September 24, 2020, 11:06:27 PM »
Hi Forum and especially to the pilots,

After witnessing some horrendous conditions at sea, the pilots get some serious respect from myself. If the photo loads up, just look at the pitching of this vessel just outside the 'heads' at Milford Haven. I could see a guy on the main ladder but it's the rope ladder hanging down and how much steelwork is visible below it as the vessel rolls to the other side. I guess it's all about choosing "the moment".

Best wishes and stay safe you guys.

Help and Advice / Digital zoom vs optical zoom
« on: August 25, 2020, 10:12:24 PM »
Hi Forum,

I'm looking to change my camera but can't get my head around Optical Zoom and Digital Zoom.

As an example, a camera with an Optical zoom of 60 and a Digital zoom of 4. It doesn't make sense to me.

Regards and thanks in advance.
