Pretty awful here too. A tad disappointing that it's taking so long to sort out . . .

Has anyone else noticed that the "number of pics on site" banner seems to have stalled?

1000kg bags of Ammonium Nitrate would be my guess . . .

G'Day Stephen,

Port Alma is known for Ammonium Nitrate (explosives) and tallow exports and a small amount of petroleum imports. It's a very small, shallow port in the middle of nowhere near Rockhampton. What's in the containers ??

I posted an aerial shot a few years ago, luckily flying high enough to escape the sandflies that infest the place . . .

Help and Advice / Re: Miramar Subscrptions

G'Day Dave,

I don't have any details, but I believe that Rodger who runs Miramar recently passed away. I would hope that someone will take over, but it may take a little while to sort out.

Sorry brian e cole,

The reason we have rules, is to stop Shipspotting from descending into the free-for-all that other sites end up with. If the admins start issuing exemptions, that will undoubtedly happen.

I note that you have been a member for quite a while, so you will remember that the current rules are a lot looser than the original ones.

Just my two-bob's worth.

Thanks for your prompt actions Owen, and thanks for the heads up Tony. I've fired off an email to the IP bods also. If we annoy them enough, some action may be taken.

Shipping News and information / Re: Pacific Triangle reported sold

G'day Peter,

Sad news about a vessel that both of us are familiar with.

It appears that even the Australian owned/chartered, foreign flagged vessels are losing their Australian manning. The Rumours are that the TANDARA SPIRIT has been sold and will soon depart, to be replaced with spot charters on the coast. I believe that Viva Energy (who bought Shell's Australian interests) ended the charter last week. Rio Tinto though seem to be bucking the trend somewhat, with their Weipa-Gladstone vessels majority Australian manned, but with Singapore registry.

G'day Kelvin,

According to the media releases here, they are keeping the other vessels at a distance, to help the OCEAN SHIELD's equipment hear the black box "pulses", without all the din from the other ship's machinery, etc.

G'day Clyde (and others),

If you open Marine Traffic and check the Indian Ocean off the north west coast, approx. abeam Exmouth, the search area is clearly outlined and vessels visible.

Shipping News and information / Taking a break
« on: May 26, 2013, 11:03:41 AM »
Just a short note to all my friends on SS, that I will be taking a break from uploading for a while. I have been perusing this site since the very early days and have been uploading since 2006. I have enjoyed most of my time here and have had many good yarns with some of you, both through PMs and on photo comments.

Lately, though, there has been quite a negative attitude becoming pervasive throughout the site and a dictatorial attitude coming from the people running the site. The "I will delete any futher forum discussion on deletions" attitude is not, I believe, a healthy development. I realise that running a website as large, varied and international as this one is a difficult job, but there are an increasing number of websites which cater to the shipping enthusiast. I believe that SS will continue to slide if the current situation continues.

This is of course only my opinion, but by the number of long term members with literally thousands of contributions having departed over the last couple of years, perhaps a widely held one among us long-timers.

Thanks for all the nice comments over the years chaps,
