Shipping News and information / Island Escape documentary?
« on: February 22, 2013, 10:49:10 AM »
Where could I find/buy the 2002 TV mini-series on Island Escape titled "The Cruise Ship"? It was initially broadcast in the UK, then on Bravo.

All I could find was a synopsis at http://www.locatetv.com/tv/cruise-ship/127368

The nice thing to do would be to archive (ZIP) all HTML and image files, and upload the archive to Dropbox and make the link public. Then someone (I would volunteer) could quickly write software to parse and export most of the data to http://www.marinetraffic.com/, which unlike Fakta, has an open (wiki) model that scales and doesn't depend on one particular person. For that that requires human intervention, crowdsourcing among the many ship enthusiasts in the world will take care of all the 5700 ships pretty quickly.

http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/shipdetails.aspx?mmsi=311705000 is an example of data for a ship (MV Explorer).

If someone is in touch with Micke, PLEASE suggest that he does just this one thing: zip everything up, and upload to Dropbox. We can thank him one final time and take it from there.

The Opus Casino (formerly Liquid Vegas, Royal star) was recently donated to The Seasteading Institute, a think tank researching permanent ocean-based communities.

From http://www.seasteading.org/lease-the-seasteader-i/:

Quote
The Seasteading Institute is requesting preliminary proposals to charter a seaworthy, 225 foot, four deck ship recently donated to the institute.  As a non-profit, we are able to offer this vessel at substantially below market rates to a company or non-profit whose use will advance our mission of establishing permanent human habitation on the oceans.  We

In the meantime, Titan Salvage Issued an official news release on May 22, at http://www.titansalvage.com/News-and-Media/Press-Releases/Presented-in-Rome-The-Plan-for-the-Removal-of-the-Wreck-of-the-Costa-Concordia

They plan to refloat the hull, and the operation will take 12 months. CNN has a nice 3-minute video, http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/international/2012/05/21/tsr-todd-salvaging-concordia.cnn where they say they'll cut it up and sell it for scrap to recoup some of the cost.

Does anyone have any idea as to how much that scrap value will be?

Shipping News and information / Blueseed

I just read on Discovery News about a rather intriguing project going on in California - a group is working to moor a used cruise ship in international waters right off the Silicon Valley coast, and retrofit it to create an international coworking space there for high-tech startups. The plan is to have 1000 entrepreneurs live on the ship by Q3 2013. Story is here, http://news.discovery.com/tech/blue-seed-tech-incubator-120522.html

Does anyone know what ship they plan to use? The article quotes a cost around $30M and I'm thinking it would have to be rather large to be stable in the Pacific chop near San Francisco, so maybe a laid up ocean liner? A decommissioned aircraft carried would serve them well, but I don't see one becoming available before Q3 2013. Jack-ups would be stable, but too small.
