 Yes Mike.
It's the end of a service going back something like 180 years!!!
Pity..I liked those HSS 1500 ships.
I like the idea when a company does something different.
These vessels were hugely interesting ships in many ways. Gas Turbines for a start.
It looks like the HSS Discovery in Venezula is still laid up so one wonders what'll happen to this Stena Explorer. The good news is fuel is cheap.
If it was ever going to get a new owner/ manager it would be now.
I would say that won't happen though.
We'll most likely not see their like again.

Stena line are no longer going to call at Dun Laoighre on their Dublin-Wales service.

So I guess the Stena Exploer's days are numbered.

Seems like the low price of crude is of benefit to tanker owners.
From Tradewinds the 440,000 DWT is being taken out of Layup.
Wonder where it was laid up?
 Heres the story

Thank you Mike,Chas and rd77.
There are some good books there..and Chas thank you for the list.
I must say it's slightly frustrating as the best books seem to be written in French or German, which I can't read :(

And rd77..I googled translated that link you posted..That book seems ideal. And it is priced well also.
Unfortunately like I said it's a pity they are not available in other languages.

but I am leaning towards one of the books on the list that Chas posted " A century of Tankers"
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/8299659604/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3BIHUH66G69MJ&coliid=I23QCCOSN5HPDO

But the other German and French books seem superior and are also cheaper!!!!!!
But thank you for the tips.
Regards.

Shipping News and information / Books about Tankers.

Hi all.
I am seeking to buy a book about post war oil tankers.
Something about the story of the VLCC and ULCC, their owners such as Ludwig etc.
The race to build the biggest.
About the changing economy and what led them to been laid up.
Am looking for something with plenty of pictures and text also.
Not really interested in a book about one particular company.
So far I have found 2 books both from the same publisher.
And was wondering if anyone can recommend a book that would meet my requirements or indeed if anyone has these books and could recommend either of them.

http://www.witherbyseamanship.com/supertankers-anatomy-and-operation.html

http://www.witherbyseamanship.com/tankers-an-introduction-to-the-transportation-of-oil-by-sea.html

The first book looks tempting at over 600 pages but am afraid it might be too technical and aimed at colleges etc.
too like a textbook

So, many thanks in advance for any tips.
P.S  I wouldn't ask, but there are very few reviews of these books to make a choice.
P.P.s Please nothing TOO expensive, also.

rude comments were indeed quite uncalled for.
.
He wasn't asking a question..He was making a case that the Captain was behaving in a timid fashion.

Now ..Why is what I say considered rude..But someone who it appears has no other qualification other than a website be able to make such claims?
If he just asked a straight forward question..I wouldn't care less.
But If he is using information gleaned off a website..Which may or may not be accurate to smear a cruise ship Captain.
Than I feel entitled to A ) Ask him what qualifications he has for doing so?
And B) why anyone feels the need to be a back seat driver in the first place?

By all means..Ask why a ship didn't call into a port at such a time.
But don't do a hatchet job. and frame it as a question.
It's uncalled for.

Why this rude comment?
.
Nothing rude about it.
I am asking what qualifications this person has to question how a ship is being run?
It's all very well having an armchair opinion and to be second guessing.
But without any experience in these matters..What's the point?
I mean really.

Shipping News and information / Re: China explains P3 rejection

What has the Valemax affair got to do with this one of container consortia?
.

Answer: Everthing.
China rejected Valemax even though they were offered a share in it.

Why did they reject it...Simple; Raw materials arrive in China by ship, and finished goods leave by ship.
The raw materials arrive in Bulkers and finished good leave in boxes on container ships.
Understand the reason why China rejected Valemax and you understand the reason why they reject P3.

By rejecting Valemax..China stopped, what they saw as a company getting control over the shipping hence the final price of Raw Materials.

By rejecting P3..China stopped what they saw as a Group of companies getting control over the price of shipping, hence the final price of consumer goods.

It has everything to do with it.
It's all to do with what China feels that a company or large company would have too much control..So even If Chinese were invited to P3..They'd still say NO..Just like they said no to Valemax...even after Chinese shipping were invited into that.

Don't you think the master of a ship should decide..what he does..where he goes etc?

If you agree...then why the second guessing?
Leave it to the experts. Or have go got a foreign going Master's Ticket?

As I recall it, somebody made a first comment that the reason P3 was rejected was that no Chinese lines were involved. That, I am also convinced, is the real reason!
Unfortunately the original comment poster used a naughty word to emphasise his disagreement with the public relations waffle in the original press report so probably his valid comment was deleted.
.

Negative...Chinese companies were offered a stake in the Valemax shipping..Hell.. their shipyards even built some of them..The Chinese still. refused to let the Valemax dock in China. even. with Chinese owners and builders.
That is simply not it..The Chinese do not want any companies whether Chinese or foreign to have too big a slice of the pie..And would be able to set the market price for freight rates..End of.
The EU and USA should be doing the same thing.

Hate to say I told you so...The only surprise to me is that the USA didn't stop it.

Back in October 2013 I said.

This whole idea smacks of anti competitive.
I'm surprised the US haven't used their Anti trust laws to break this up..Or perhaps the EU.

Can't see this lasting..at all.

The case of the Exxon Valdez is not really relevant.
She was converted to a Bulk Carrier and sailed as such before scrapping.
So, it wasn't just a case of changing the name for scrapping.

« on: March 27, 2014, 05:14:54 PM »
 In the old days.
In order to register a ship in a "home Port"  the home port had to have a Customs House.
I believe this was a requirement necessary to register a ship in a city or port.
And as Custom Houses were on the Docks, Quays or nearby that is why ships got registered in
  cities with ports in them.

as the examples above show this is no longer the case.

This is my understanding about this.
