Books about Tankers.
« on: January 13, 2015, 04:25:58 PM »

Hi all.
I am seeking to buy a book about post war oil tankers.
Something about the story of the VLCC and ULCC, their owners such as Ludwig etc.
The race to build the biggest.
About the changing economy and what led them to been laid up.
Am looking for something with plenty of pictures and text also.
Not really interested in a book about one particular company.
So far I have found 2 books both from the same publisher.
And was wondering if anyone can recommend a book that would meet my requirements or indeed if anyone has these books and could recommend either of them.

http://www.witherbyseamanship.com/supertankers-anatomy-and-operation.html

http://www.witherbyseamanship.com/tankers-an-introduction-to-the-transportation-of-oil-by-sea.html

The first book looks tempting at over 600 pages but am afraid it might be too technical and aimed at colleges etc.
too like a textbook

So, many thanks in advance for any tips.
P.S  I wouldn't ask, but there are very few reviews of these books to make a choice.
P.P.s Please nothing TOO expensive, also.

That is a nice list Chas!

I should add that Kohler Verlag has published an update on "Giganten der Weltmeere" in 2011. A must have if you are into VLCC's!

http://www.amazon.de/Giganten-Meere-gr%C3%B6%C3%9Ften-Tankschiffe-Welt/dp/3782210069

The book also has an extensive list of all VLCC's built up to 2011, include their later names and final fates.

Thank you Mike,Chas and rd77.
There are some good books there..and Chas thank you for the list.
I must say it's slightly frustrating as the best books seem to be written in French or German, which I can't read :(

And rd77..I googled translated that link you posted..That book seems ideal. And it is priced well also.
Unfortunately like I said it's a pity they are not available in other languages.

but I am leaning towards one of the books on the list that Chas posted " A century of Tankers"
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/8299659604/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3BIHUH66G69MJ&coliid=I23QCCOSN5HPDO

But the other German and French books seem superior and are also cheaper!!!!!!
But thank you for the tips.
Regards.
Oz
