Help and Advice / Re: Funnel Markings
« on: May 17, 2016, 06:38:10 PM »
Hi, books on flags, funnels & hull colours published in UK post WW2 have been by Adlard Coles & most recently by J.L.Loughran. The Talbot-Booth books had them in black & white.

I can well remember having to explain to some of my officers that the most important collision avoidance equipment was the wheelhouse windows.

My last ship was named SPRING DELIGHT & her identical sister was SPRING DESIRE. We traded regularly to Guayaquil & a Rio Guayas pilot asked me what the names meant. I told him that one was hopeful for something nice to happen while the other, mine, got lucky!

Hi Geir,

Sorry on that one; last position I could get was in 2012! That particular ship could be a freezer or a reefer. In either case it seems that she was rigged for fish loading as in your photo she has the Yokohama fenders in the water for trawlers to come alongside.

Hi Geir,

The list contains ships exceeding 200,000 cubic feet refrigerated space. Ships of less than this are generally not reefers but freezers (fish carriers) & unable to carry fruit products whereas reefers can carry anything between -20 & +15C. Known reefers of less than 200,000 cuft are included in the list.

ISLEMAN (YURUSHIMA MARU) is a freezer of 197,056 cuft & is designed for transhipping at sea; note the Yokohama fender on deck.

I do have records of nearly all ships less than 200,000 cuft down to 50,000 cuft & can generally answer any questions about them should you require.

Regards,
Tony

Last reefer built ATLANTIC KLIPPER 2011 for Seatrade  although Kyokuyo did have a couple of options I haven't been able to find out if they were actually built. There is a bit of a swan song for reefers at present due to slow steaming by box boats. Fruit shippers need fast transit times.

Hi Juan Carlos,

I have been lucky enough to sail through the Magellan Strait & the Patagonian Channels almost as far as Puerto Montt but have never been able to set foot in your beautiful country. I also spent one season looking after Cool Carriers Chilean fruit imports at Philadelphia. I don't know which ships will be involved in the upcoming fruit season but I beleive that Cool Carriers will be one company together with Seatrade, Star, Baltic & Triton. I wish you all the good luck with your phtography over the next few months.

Fully agree with Capn Ted, ship should have got out of the dangerous quadrant by using the Florida Strait. As far as I recall it used to be mandatory in UK flag ships when I was doing my tickets. There are unknowns at the moment: what was the situation of owners/managers? How much fuel was on board? What was the stability of the ship? There appeared to be large openings in the upper hull - if she took water in would she be able to shed it immediately? What was her condition (I know she must have been within class) but she was 40 years old? I remember when I worked in LA, Matson had some similar ships & I was never very impressed with them - did they have a military function if required?

For the moment let us all hope that the vessel will be found & that loved ones will be reunited. We all know it's tough out there & our hearts & prayers go out to those on board & those who wait hopefully.

Shipping News and information / Stability of Large Cruise Ships
« on: September 23, 2015, 05:59:50 PM »
Having spent over 20 years calculating stability of fairly tender ships I have been unable to explain to others that large cruise may look top-heavy but cannot be so. This week I went to see BRITANNIA & NORWEGIAN EPIC at Cartagena & what I saw I found amazing.
BRITANNIA 143,730grt, 11,793dwt, 27'03" draft, 4,324 Pax, 1,398 Crew. 15 decks above waterline; it does look top-heavy. The deadweight would consist of 5,722 pax & crew together with effects, fuel, lubricants, fresh water, 4 swimming pools with free surface, all stores & consumeables and spare parts. I have heard of cases where the rudder has been applied well, if not hard, over with the ships taking a significant list. What I would really like to know is what are the locations of the centre of gravity and the metacentre and what is the metacentric height in the full deadweight condition; also the full load displacement tonnage.

Would appreciate some info from those experienced in these ships.

Ships employed as follows:
ANDALUCIA, CORDOBA, GRANADA, TOLEDO all trading far east mainly Philippines/Japan.
ARACENA was trading fareast now central/south America/USEC.
LUCENA was trading central/south America/USEC now on voyage Caribbean/Iran.
RONDA, STAR ENDEAVOUR 1, STAR LEADER, STAR PRIDE all trading central/south America/USEC
MARBELLA, MURCIA, HORNBAY, HORNCAP, HORNCLIFF all trading central/south america/USWC
STAR CARE has been trading central/south America/USEC & USWC.

I read somewhere that they might have containerised their North European services. If they have not we just need to find out which which ships they are using for Portsmouth etc., & we will know the complete fleet. It will not be any of the other STAR ships as they are all fixed to Fyffes.
