HMS BRISTOL for refit
« on: October 17, 2010, 04:26:23 PM »
I've heard that the old destroyer, now static training ship, is about to leave Portsmouth under tow for a six month refit on the Tyne. The departure date seems to vary with Monday 18th October & Wednesday 20th mentioned.

Can anyone confirm this?

Many photos of HMS BRISTOL on the site.

Regards

Bob

Found this on HMS Bristol.
Note the bottom lines!
Quote:
HMS Bristol is due for a full refit in September 2010. It is expected that the refit will take 6 months and will see the ship move to a drydock at Portsmouth Naval Base in September. This refit will give HMS Bristol another 15 years.

Hi Bob
I guess they are waiting for a good 'weather window' for the complete tow to the Tyne,  as it's not exactly flat off the Tyne at present

Saturday night 18.00
Now off the French coast in the English Channel shipping lane northbound.
Towing at 7 knots showing ETA of Tues 2nd at 12.00, my guess is this will change.

She is infact not actually going to Newcastle, but to the A & P Shipyard at Hebburn on the Tyne.

She made it into drydock on the second attempt due to the shipyard calling off the first attempt due to the wind though pilot and tugs were happy to continue :-
