Just seen on "Sky" News the MSC Napoli successfully split in two this morning, live broadcast was around 12.30hr. nice pictures from them and i expect the MCA digital image library will have nice pictures later.

Regards, Alan.

Is there any Secunda Marine or Dominion Diving vessels involved in the operation? I could have sworn I saw the Panuke Sea and the Emerald Sea.
Also, I think it to be important for the full and proper name of the vessel to be included in the largest national news corporation in Britain, but for my own personal records to save time I will shorten names (i.e. Edward Cornwallis instead of CCGS Edward Cornwallis).
But really, on a national respected news corporation they should get it right, and there neglecting to ticks me off.

Successfully split today, I can see from my house the two sections some way apart. For the record, the ships involved in the salvage currently are Maersk Advancer, Smit Bronco, Smit Bever, Union Beaver and RT Magic.

I am so sad... :-(
I know it's necessary, and inevitable in the situation, but it's sad to see such a once-grand ship broken apart and derelict like that...

I had had dreams, for years, of going back with my wife to visit my old lady (U.S.S. Sacramento) someday... then I learned that she'd been decommissioned and was slated for eventual disposal via fleet gunnery practice; I was even too late to go on her final goodbye cruise.  I wish we could just plop her up in Alameda by the former U.S.S. Hornet.
sniff...

I only ever got one shot of her, that was at Terneuzen two years ago. I'm glad I did. It's on my website, if you want to see it.  :-(

Hi Andrew, I remember seeing her as CMA CGM Normandie at Southampton a few years ago and not being in a position to get a photo. I then saw her in the Solent, from the Ryde-Portsmouth FastCat not long after, again no chance for a photo, so I was pleased when I finally got her at Terneuzen. Third time lucky and she couldn't avoid me that time!

Whats going to happen to the two parts? Will they be taken for scrap or sunk at sea?

ShipImages:
I went and checked out your shot of her, that is a great image!!  I like your RIP message, too.  Thanks!

Would have been exciting to stand on that bridge while she was underway...

My understanding is that the accomodation and stern section will be broken up where she is, and the forward section will be taken away and scrapped.  Sites in Northern Europe are being considered for this.

A couple of days ago, the BBC reported that there was a plan being considered to load the scrap from the aft section onto the forward section and take it all away in one go.

Hi dwalker

The Devon County Council web site seems to be a good resource for finding out what is happening with the MSC Napoli, see:
http://www.devon.gov.uk/msc-napoli-update

This is what they said on Friday to clarify and deny what the BBC were reporting:
