« on: December 25, 2006, 05:23:15 AM »
On Dec 22, 2006 the General Dynamics Electric Boat Co. delivered the Hawaii (SSN-776), the nation's newest and most advanced nuclear powered attack submarine  to the U.S. Navy, well ahead of schedule.  In addition to the early delivery the Hawaii was built with less than 2 millioin man hours less than the Virginia, the last sub built by General Dynamics at its Groton, Conn yard.

The Hawaii is the third ship of the Virginia Class, following the Virginia (SSN 774) and Texas (SSN 775).

Electric Boat and Northrop Grumman of Newport News, Virginia have received contracts to build the first 10 submarines of a planned 30 group Virginia Class under a teaming agreement that splits the constructiion workload between the two shipyards.

The Virginia Class submarines displace 7,835tons; length is 377 feet; beam is 34 feet; payload is 40 weapons as well as capability of carrying special operations forces and unmanned undersea vehicles; 12 vertical launch system tubes for Tomahawk land attack missles; carries Mark 48 advanced capability torpedoes; has a crew of 134 officers and enlisted men.  Nuclear powered.

Forthcoming submariens:
SSN 777 North Carolina
SSN 778 New Hampshire
SSN 779 New Mexico
