Denis,

I cannot, but maybe this may provide a clue on how to get there:

* The name on the hull is impossible to read, but...

* The name on the sail appears to be HENKLINE; If you google that name, although it appears often, it does not appear to be connected to a shipping or maritime company. Is there still a "HENKLINE" in operation today?

* The date on the photo is 8/9/1988;

* The photographer was apparently "NILS KOCH"; If you google that, you get many names of people named Nils Koch, none of whom apparently involved in maritime photography in the '80s - except maybe one...Look here:

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/search.php?search_uid=1130

So there is a member of Ship Spotting under that name!

If you then look closer, you'll see that this member, even if he has a reduced number of photos online, none of which of a motor-sailer, he is still active, and his last contribution to the database was added on 25/1/2013...

So, here's my suggestion. How about sending this photographer a Personal Message and asking him directly whether or not he may have been the author of the photo that is now intriguing you? And if he has more info on the ship he captured on photo?

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Jos

I found some informations on the german Greenpeace site and Wikipedia.

In the 80's total 17 ships were built in Japan, one of them was the smal tanker

The mystery vessel is certainly not SHIN AITOKU MARU, as that vessel was built as a tanker, and continues to be a tanker. Apart from that, there are too many other differences, such as hull shape, superstructure, and number of sails for it to be the same vessel.

The mystery bulker/gen. cargo vessel does have one feature to note specifically. The extended lattice mast is very similar to the one installed on USUKI PIONEER, indicating, perhaps, that this vessel came out of the same yard. The best bet is she is one of the 14 additional unidentified vessels equipped with those sails apart from SHIN AITOKU MARU, USUKI PIONEER, and AQUA CITY mentioned in some sources.

Kyle

That's a pretty huge aft mast due to that sail obstruction.
Could anyone, please, provide some rules regarding of top lights arrangement/heights, especially if there's such an obstruction on forecastle?

Denis

Hi

Here is the list of the 17 Japanese sail assisted ships built in th 80's (page 7)
http://www.aseanenergy.info/Abstract/33000192.pdf

There are only 2 bulk carriers with only one sail in this list : the Yamakuni Maru and the Calbee Potato Maru.

Yamakuni Maru IMO 8507585 is now the Jing Jiang but heading for demolition.
The Calbee Potato Maru (IMO 8408090) is still sailing as Safe Sailing; there are no photo of her on Shipspotting but there are a few ones on Marinetraffic http://photos.marinetraffic.com/ais/showphoto.aspx?photoid=1307647
The mystery photo does not look like the Safe Sailing at all(even without sails) so I assume she is the Yamakuni Maru.

Unless you've got a different answer from the photographer

Cheers

Christine
