Problem with text
« on: January 03, 2011, 05:04:51 PM »
Hi

Is there a problem with text?

I've noticed that when I use a ' or " character (on photograph description), a backslash \ appears in front of it, sometimes more than once!!

Regards

Bob

Hello
Ships name COTE D'AZUR, I think you use the wrong key.
Try key with * and ' .With ' it works.

Hello Knudde

I do not have a key with * and ' both on one. My keyboard must be different to yours. The system obviously does not recognise my keyboard, and keeps inserting \ instead of '

Hello
I don't know what kind of keyboard you have, but here is a picture of one.

http://cs49230.com/arch/Picture%20of%20Windows%20Keyboard%20-%20Explanation%20of%20Keys.htm
When you open it you will see a keybord, and in the group with letters, and to the left of
the "enter key" you will see the key ment. On topp a " * " and under " ' " and the last one
is used in "COTE D'AZUR"
Good luck

Bjorn,

I have to concur with Tony on this one.

Hello Knudde

I do not have a key with * and ' both on one. My keyboard must be different to yours. The system obviously does not recognise my keyboard, and keeps inserting \ instead of '

Tony

I've been having the same problem on here for a while now. This is a brand new keyboard sold in the U.K. (and I have a few others bought in the last couple of years just the same.) It needs sorting.

Best Regards
John J.

I think this may relate to how you have your keyboard set up.
Regardless of how your keyboard looks, when you set up your PC you specify which keyboard you are using. The PC then interprets keystrokes according to which key is pressed.
So, if the key on my keyboard showing the ' and @ symbols is pressed, the PC interprets this as the appropriate ASCII value. If my keyboard was set up as a different keyboard (different language etc) then the ASCII values sent depends on what that keyboard set up decrees, regardless of what the little symbol on the key itself says.

There! I just checked my own post and the correct characters were displayed.

I don't think it's to do with PC setup, my keyboard works 100% as a PC & on all other websites, the problem only occurs on this site and I have only noticed it since the new site went on line. It also only happens with photo uploads.

BTW, the link I mentioned above now shows a corrected title without the \, my other photo still has the additional character.

I am using a standard keyboard as sold in the UK, and the keys are arranged differently to those in the link posted by Bjorn. The symbols I type are posted correctly on all other web sites, it is only this one where I have a problem.

Similar problem putting in a URL link

type as shown under "Insert Hyperlink" at http://forum.shipspotting.com/index.php?action=help;page=post#bbc
but get [url">http://www.bms-towing.nl/
http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1268131

No problem typing a "]" with any other website.

[and no trouble typing it here either!]

Thanks to whoever has anonymously fixed my link.  I see that the "descriptive link" version does work properly so will stick to that.  Fingers crossed.

I've got the same thing happening on all the photos I've uploaded. Dunno what's changed but hopefully it'll get fixed soon!
