Saga Rose rumoured to be sold
« on: October 14, 2009, 07:51:16 PM »
Rumour has it that 1965-built Saga Rose (IMO. 6416043) has been sold though there has been no official announcement from Saga Cruises yet.
She's due to end her last cruise for Saga on December, 6, at Southampton and will then sail to her new owners just before Christmas with a small delivery crew.

Her rumoured destination is West Africa.

Best regards,
Jens

Lets hope so, She is a fine vessel, and should be kept sailing.

I agree with you Ferry-Man, but I'm not sure what to make of West Africa as her destination.
Well, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Hi Jens

No doubt for scrapping in West Africa then? - the reason she is being decommissioned is that she was too expensive for the necessary work to bring her up to the new SOLAS 2010 regulations.

Steve,

No scrapyards are located in West Africa.

Hi Aleksi

Not yet!

See this Greenpeace article about the proposals to open up an "Alang" equivalent in Guinea Bissau - http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/nature-reserve-or-scrap-yard

Hi Steve,

hope she'll be with us some more years.
Regarding the scrapyard in West Africa, has it been built?
The article's from 2003...

Jens

Hi Phil,

On Saga Cruises website it says:
"Southampton, England
October 30. Embark Saga Rose and sail at 1600 amid a spectacular send-off."

No further explanation what the "spectacular send-off" will be like...

Jens
