Does anyone know why this happened? Did they just have too much confidence in their ships abilities (as have been seen before), did she succumb to bad weather or was there some kind of collision?

We called Peterhead a few times while I was onboard the M

Crew rescued as tug capsizes
Brake vessel to barge gets into difficulties then sinks near Peterhead harbour

By John Thomson

Published: 15/06/2009

Three crew members of a tug were rescued after the vessel capsized yesterday near the entrance to Peterhead harbour.

The Dutch-registered Ysselstroom was one of two tugs assisting the barge Tak Boa 1, carrying a cargo of stone from Sweden, into the port.

She was acting as a brake vessel at the stern, while another tug towed the barge at the front, when she got into difficulties.

The alarm was raised at about 4.30am and Aberdeen Coastguard alerted vessels in the area and requested the launch of Peterhead lifeboat.

Before the lifeboat could become involved, a harbour pilot boat picked up the three crewmen from the water and brought them ashore.

The tug remained partly submerged for a short time and then sank in about 80ft of water about 500 yards from the harbour entrance.

The crew, two Dutchmen and a Scot, were shocked but uninjured.

The maritime and coastguard agency said last night it was too early to speculate on the cause of the capsize. A spokeswoman said:

This sounds somewhat similar to what happened to the Bourbon Dolphin, though that was a far larger vessel! An aweful thing when this happens! You only have a few seconds to react, so if anyone is sleeping, they won't even know what happened until it's too late! Once you get below the waterline, it is virtually impossible to open a door or hatch until everything is full of water! Fortunately, the crew on this boat was so small that they were probably all at work at the time of the accident which probably saved their lives!
