Singaporean tanker, the "Summer Spirit", on Dec 10 afternoon rescued 14 crew members of an Indonesian vessel, the m/v "Mega Permai", which sank in Bintan waters, on Dec. 8. The naval ship "Cucut" picked them up, and the 14 sailors are currently undergoing medical checkups at Batam Hospital. "They drifted around in the sea for two days. One Indonesian crew member was killed in the sea accident 75 miles off Bintan Island. The ill-fated MV "Mega Permai" was carrying staple food from Kalimantan to Tanjungpinang, Sumatra, when it sank.
The Indonesian navy mobilized a helicopter and a warship to help search and rescue the ill-fated ship's crew members but the efforts were hampered by bad weather and huge waves.
