Saga Rose to be retired
« on: November 05, 2008, 12:16:01 AM »
Saga Holidays, owner of the 1965-built Saga Rose (ex-Gripsholm, ex-Sagafjord) have announced to retire her at the end of 2009.
She's scheduled to arrive at Southampton for the last time on December, 6, 2009 after a 37 night cruise in the Mediterranean.

Looks like she's the next victim of SOLAS 2010. (Just guessing, though)

Best regards,
Jens

Hi Jens

Your guess was correct - see this article on the implications of SOLAS 2010:

Hi,

will she go to the scrappers after her current job is finished or are there any plans to save her?

Hi Cedric

Appears in the current economical climate she is not thought to be commercially viable to upgrade her to a state where she would pass SOLAS 2010. With the growing number of Cruise Ships I reckon that the scrapyard beckons this Ship.

Hi Steve,

thanks for the info on SOLAS.

The small article I read revealed nothing about her future beyond her retirement.
But I think that there's said enough in this case, when there's nothing said.
I agree with you, she'll be off to the breakers. :-(

Best regards,
Jens

Saga Rose is far from the scrappers. A French group is interested in her, and they have the financial backing to pull it off. Also, Saga Holidays seems to be open to seeing her preserved. So she is far from lost.

I heard unofficially that a French consortium is interested in her in  a static role. Will try to get it confirmed/denied

Hi David

Of course Fred Olsen's BLACK PRINCE is also being 'retired' for the same reasons - uneconomical to carry out the work required for SOLAS 2010. She goes last next year.
