QE2's funnel 'to be sliced off'

Details are emerging of what will happen to the world-famous passenger
liner QE2 when it retires next month to become a floating hotel in Dubai.

The plans are unlikely to appeal to QE2's traditional fans. Even the
iconic silhouette of the world's best-known ship will change.

According to the liner's crew, the new owners in Dubai plan to slice off
the giant red funnel, placing it on the waterfront as an entrance to the
ship.

In its place will be a four-deck smoked glass penthouse, in the shape of
the funnel but with a swimming pool. The idea is to make it the most
exclusive hotel room in Dubai.

The lifeboats will all go. And extra rooms will be built on the deck
towards the stern.

Inside, every cabin will be ripped out and replaced with new, larger
bedrooms that meet the latest standards.

And the ship's engines will be taken out, and the space used to create a
new entertainment venue.

"What's happening to the ship is very good," insists Cpt Ian McNaught,
QE2's master for the last five years.

"Because the alternatives are so awful. It could go to scrap and
disappear. Or it could get run into the ground as an ignominious ferry
in some backwater somewhere."

But surely many passengers would see the removal of the famous funnel as
being in poor taste?

"Yes, but wait until you see what's replacing the funnel," said Cpt
McNaught. "It's good."

The new owners of QE2 have been travelling on board for weeks, working
out their plans.

"They seem to change every day," said one engineering officer. "I don't
like the sound of it - this won't be the QE2 we all know."

But the ship is 41 years old and well past its prime. QE2 may still be
the fastest cruise ship afloat, but it does not meet the expectations of
today's passengers, accustomed to the comforts of newer cruise ships.

To bring the vessel up to modern safety standards would cost a fortune.
Environmentally, the liner is a basket case with fuel economy: 49ft
(15m) to the gallon.

QE2's great predecessor, Queen Mary, has been a floating hotel at Long
Beach in California since 1967. It has now been a tourist attraction
longer than it was at sea.

On board, it retains its magnificent art deco public rooms. But
financially, keeping it open has often been a struggle.

QE2 was sold for £50m. The buyer, real estate developers Nakheel, will
spend far more than that before re-opening the liner to guests in 2010.
It wants the ship as a centrepiece of Palm Jumeirah, the palm-shaped
fronds of reclaimed land and beach on the Dubai waterfront.

Nakheel also announced plans this week for the world's tallest building:
a skyscraper more than 1km (0.62 miles) high.

The company has signed a "gagging" contract with Cunard that prevents it
from talking about its plans until after the last passengers and crew
have left the ship.

On Friday evening, QE2 sails from Southampton on its 805th and last
transatlantic round crossing to New York. It will leave its home port
for the final time for Dubai at 1915 GMT on Tuesday 11 November. An
enormous farewell is planned.

Just thought, it's an interesting article. One one side yes, the buyer owns it - and therefore should be allowed to do, whatever want.
On the other side, it's just just "any ship" so, some part in my head makes me think, that the ship should not be altered in that way, the unique funnel belongs to the ship - where it is, not anywhere else. Buying the Eiffel tower, paint it pink and turn it upside down also does not sound so much of an good idea to me

But that doesn't add an attraction to visitors.

The main pulling power will be "Enjoy your stay aboard the QE2"

The famous 3 words.

Queen Elizabeth 2.

You will be able to increase the price per room on the addage that you will be staying aboard the QE2.

Its all about history and Advertising Campaigns which will act as a draw to the area.

Mention the QE2, you will get people flocking.

Mention a floating hotel. Nah it doesn't have the same reaction.

Now add QE2 a floating hotel. That will have more pulling power than a new  purpose built hull of a ship.

That will be a crime to chop the funnel off.

I thought the Arab's plans for the QE2 was to restore here to her original layout or something like that, but now they at to build on to her, remove the lifeboats (well year I can sort of understand that) I would at least get elcheapo replicas of the lifeboats mide to replace the orginals so it looks complete.

I fear the ship will end up un reconisable.

There has been many changes inside QE2 over the 41 years of her life. Some more wouldn't make any difference.

Regarding the removal of her funnel I find very strange as it makes Cunard ships recognisable immediately.   Capt McNaught says what is replacing the funnel 'is good'.

I guess it's a case of wait and see. I hope Capt McNaught is right.

Hi,

I was sort of hoping they would treat her like the Queen Mary 2 at Long Beach...
While I can understand these interior changes, I can't say the same about the exterior job: without her funnel and lifeboats, her whole look will have changed!

I know this is not really politically correct, but from what I read, the plan they have with the ship sounds like something, people would do who do have alot of money. But there are a few things, that money can not buy. One of them is good taste, and a sense for ships with history.
Knowing that the Arabs also do have a like for a very decadent style (which does often not come together with above mentioned good taste) I would not be surprised if the QE2 would finally remind more in something from Las Vegas than the original ship.
I hope that I am wrong though  :-D

Hi All

Just been looking at the Nakheel web site @
http://www.nakheel.com/en/news/a_home_fit_for_a_queen__nakheel_reveals_location_for_qe2_on_palm_jumeirah

Interesting to note that the artist impression of the Queen's final berth have her with her funnel intact. Perhaps the story about her having the Red Funnel cut off is simply an urban myth?

Hi All

I see the latest on this topic is that there is a move to have the funnel returned to Southampton in order that it can be installed in the City as a permanent memorial to the QE2.

Here is the story, courtesy of the Southern Daily Echo @ http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/3865653.Let_QE2___s_funnel_return_to_its_home/

I must admit, that I am feeling a bit dizzy here. This, from shaking my head. Getting the funnel back ? Well, get it - whereever. But not without the ship. What makes folks even thinking of taking the funnel off the ship ?

Anyways, the whole thing will make us see many more headshaking reports I fear  :-D

More news from Maritime Matters:

"Rumors Of Her Death Are Premature!
March 26: Despite published reports stating QE2 is being scrapped at Dubai (which has no such facility), the renowned liner was recently taken out for a "test drive" to keep her engines in running order while a decision is made on what to do with the ship in the world economic downturn. Owners, Nakheel, state firmly that the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 is not for sale and will either be opened up to visitors "as is" or kept safely until conditions improve and work on the vast conversion can be undertaken to make the ship into a luxury hotel at the Palm Jumierah. QE2 was recently "visited" by former fleetmate QM2, when the latter berthed at Dubai just aft of the QE2 during her 2009 world cruise."

Kai
