Be up early on Tyneside!
« on: April 25, 2008, 07:32:39 PM »
The first ship of the 'Cruise Ship Season' will arrive in the Tyne next Saturday the 3rd May in the morning, but again you keen photographers need to be up early!

She is not very big and an old timer, I am reasonably sure the 'Athena' was built in Sweden in 1948 as the ill fated 'Stockholm' which very sadly collided with the Italian liner Andrea Doria in 1956 (which unfortunatly sank) and has had many changes of ownership since, she is due in at 07.00 and due to sail at 13.30 same day.
As all other cruise ships now due over the next few months she will berth at Northumberland quay.

Mike :-)

Hi Mike

Well the early mornings will at least be light at that time in the morning
I suspect the 'Athena' in question is IMO 5383304 see Paulo's photograph @ http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=608415 ?

Previous names subsequent to her launch name of STOCKHOLM being:

60 VOLKERFREUNDSCHAFT
85 VOLKER
86 FRIDTJOF NANSEN
93 ITALIA I
93 ITALIA PRIMA
00 VALTUR PRIMA
03 CARIBE
05 ATHENA

Hi,

Steve,

Nice looking vessel.

Amazing how ships of today look a lot more square and box-like than the vessels built over 40 years ago. I much prefer the designs of years gone by.

Mike,

Glad I read your post. I'll surely be lurking on the riverbank at South Shields to capture the Athena, early as it is.

Cheers

Allan

And I might plan to go and watch the Athena from the Littlehaven Pier and depending on what time it gets in the piers I might even wait for the Princess of Norway to arrive as well! :-) And of course if there is naymore boats in the mean time, I'll snap them aswell.  :-)

Hi Kevin

No. her arrival into the Port of Tyne was pulled - I'm sure this was part of the Travelscope collapse?
