Gypsum Baron
« on: July 24, 2007, 06:55:20 PM »
Does anyone know the fate of the Gypsum Baron. Rumor here is she is headed for India to be scrapped.  I tracked her and she is in the Med right now. Any information would be appreciated. :-(

I found that last night, she is just named 'Baron' now. My guess is she is headed to the boneyard. Any idea if they will build a replacement like Gypsum Centennial, or is A.V. Kastner will be good enough for the Boston, Albany and Haverstraw trips?
PLEASE COMMENT, RATE or better yet Email or IM me to discuss anything about ships, always looking to make new friends and improve my pictures  :-D ......

I believe the Gypsum Centennial is hauling coal to Cape Breton. It still comes to Hantsport on occasion. I have heard rumors of a ship the size of it (Centennial) replacing the Baron, but didn't realize the reason. All three Gypsum ships pass my place on their way to Hantsport. The Baron was the oldest and not a self unloader.

Correction to my error regarding Gypsum Baron not being a self unloader

Gypsum Baron

Powered by General Electric steam turbines and twin Foster Wheeler "D" type boilers generating 8500 bhp.

Thanks for the information on the "Gypum Baron".

Brought back fond memories as I was the first Chief Engineer for the ship when she left the ship yard. Probably the last steam ship built in Canada.

A great ship!  Andy
