One dead, six missing in MSC boxship collision

By Brian Reyes in Gibraltar - Wednesday 13 June 2007
ONE seafarer has died and six others missing after a collision between a Moroccan fishing vessel Tikrit and the container vessel MSC Alexa, which was sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar.

According to maritime rescue centre at Rabat, the incident occurred approximately five nautical miles west of Cape Spartel, at 1500, UTC yesterday.

The fishing boat sunk immediately while the MSC Alexa is said to be in Tangier now.

Major rescue operation is ongoing in the Strait to spot missing crew from the fishing boat.

According to a Spanish source, the master of the 51,111 dwt MSC Alexa is likely to have to testify before a court in Tangier into the circumstances of the collision.

The International Maritime Organization recently approved new navigation scheme for the Strait to reflect the dangers arising from new port developments on either side of the strait.

Interesting that Mediterranean Shipping Company - the Ship Manager of this 1996 built vessel,  has issued no briefing statement regarding this incident on it's website. When the MSC Napoli foundered in January, Zodiac Maritime, the shipmanager, was very quick to issue a statement of facts. Pity that MSC themselves are so slow when one of their own vessels is involved.
