Any large containrtships on order?
« on: March 29, 2007, 10:59:55 PM »
Hello, does anybody know if there are anymore large containerships, apart from Maersk`s E class, under construction, or on the books? I`d imagine other companies would probably want larger beasts as well as Maersk?
Thankyou  :-?

Last Saturday I read in our local newspaper that Nordcapital (E.R. Schiffahrt) will order eight 13.100 TEU vessels in Korea.

Holger

There are currently 106 containerships on order of 10,000+ nominal TEU capacity.

In recent weeks, MSC, CMA-CGM, Bertram Rickmers, Nordcapital (Erck Rickmers), NSC Schiffahrt and Peter Doehle have all ordered post 12,000 teu vessels.

Can anybody inform me as to approximately how much it costs to operate a cellular vessel of this size on a per diem basis should she have to wait outside a port for a 24 hour period awaiting a berth ?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Kind regards
Brett

Tonker:

Saw a copy from a shipping newspaper yesterday in my office. There were an article about a 13000 TEU ship compared to Emma Maersk (11000 TEU).

The 13000 TEU vessel is going to be shorter, have less wide and less draft. The biggest difference that I could see on the picture is that the accommodation had been moved forward with only a few bays infront of it and the engine room still being aft, with a funnel (or two) towering up between the bays. All this making it possible to have more containers on top of each other, as there is "no IMO line to adhere to."

So if the article is right they do not need to make the larger than Emma to carry more containers.

I will try to see if it is still there tomorrow so I can give you the specifications of it.

There has been an Emma Maersk e-mail doing the rounds, I think have received 3 times now, anway it contains following specs plus photoes which may help answer some questions:

EMMA MAERSK - Get a load of this ship!  15.000 containers and a 207' beam!
And look at the crew size (13) for a ship longer than US aircraft
carriers, which have complements of 5,000 men and officers.  Think it's big
enough?
Notice that 207' beam means it was NOT designed for the Panama or Suez
canal.  It is strictly transpacific.  Check out the "cruise speed".
31 mph means the goods arrive four days before the typical container ship
traveling at 18 to 20 mph on a China-to-California run. So this
behemoth is hugely competitive when carrying perishable goods.
This ship was built in three, perhaps as many as five sections.
The sections floated together and then welded.  It is named Emma Maersk.
The command bridge is higher than a ten story building and has eleven rigs
that can operate simultaneously.
Additional info:
       Country of origin - Denmark
       Length - 1,302 ft
      Width - 207 ft
      Net cargo - 123,200 tons
      Engine - 14 in-line cylinders diesel engine (110,000 BHP)
      Cruise Speed - 31 mi/h

       Cargo capacity - 15,000 TEU (1 TEU = 20 ft3 container)
       Crew - 13 people

       First Trip - Sept. 08, 2006
       Construction cost - US $145,000,000+

The silicone paint applied to the ship's bottom reduces water resistance and saves 317,000 gallons of diesel per year

There are several mistakes in this email:

Quote
It is strictly transpacific.

She actually travels between Europe and China, via the Indian and Atlantic oceans.

Quote
Width - 207 ft

The beam is actually 56 m, or 183 feet 8 inches.

Quote
Net cargo - 123,200 tons

Using Maersk's own numbers the capacity is 11000 containers X 14 tons/container = 154000 tons.

Quote
Cargo capacity - 15,000 TEU (1 TEU = 20 ft3 container)

None of the estimates I've seen list the capacity as high as 15000. The general consensus is between 13500 and 14500.
Also, 1 TEU is not equal to 20 ft3. A TEU is 20 ft long, with a volume of 1169 ft3.
