QE2 is definitely the most beautiful ship I have ever seen! Saga Rose and Saga Ruby are beautiful too, and I have a definite soft spot for MSC Monterey, having sailed on her once.

Queen Mary 2 is magnificent too, but not as beautiful as QE2.

"Most beautyfull cruiseship in service" ?

Sea Cloud II would be my choice.

A ship that has not been mentioned in this poll is the Oceanic, though sadly she is now heading towards the breakers yard. She is certainly one of the most beautiful ships that I have ever sailed. The original Sea Cloud is, in my view, far more beautiful than her rather awkward-looking fleetmate. Many of us are agreed that Saga Ruby is high in the beauty stakes though in my opinion Saga Rose was the better ship in every way.

Guys, the topic applies to "in service", QE2 lost that classification years ago and whilst it was pretty, so were many other ships of the same era. QE2 was an Ocean Liner and so were the Union Castle Ships which were just beautiful and they were also reliable! I remember the repeated problems of QE2, is a beauty with a faulty undercarriage something to behold?

Yes, in her early days the Queen Elizabeth 2 had more than her fair share of mechanical problems but they were eventually sorted out and she sailed for a very long time, trouble free.
As for beauty, for me she never ranked that highly. She was lovely, externally, when brand new but those truly good looks did not last long and yes, there were many other liners that were more than her equal. Apart from a passing reference to Saga Rose, the ships that I mentioned are still sailing - just!

QE2 aged so quickly.
I have a personal reason about her. Just after she was re-engined for the last time my mother was about to marry a close friend but they were worried about QE2 for their "honeymoon". Cunard were offering QE2 one way and Concorde back. I knew a very, very senior Cunard Captain at the time and they asked if I could sound him out. His reply was "Leave it a year", which says everything...........

QE2 or to refer to her properly Queen Elizabeth 2 was certainly one of a kind.  No one ever tried to copy her design and through her remaining days which hopefully there will be plenty she will always be unique.  Some day some one will come across her plans of the QE2 and build a modern version of her.  Same could be said for in my opinion about the Rotterdam.

But seeing the discussion is about a cruise ship that is in service today, it is a tough question which one is the most beautiful, these days they are all pretty much built to a stock mass produced design.  I guess you could Say the NCL and Aida ones are not bad to look at with their artwork on the hulls.  But for me, I would have to say the 2 I like the most would be the Superstar Virgo and ex Superstar Leo these sister ships just have an appearance, the is nice on the eyes, decks don't look cluttered and those nice arch windows on the stern.

Funny that you should mention the arched windows at the stern of the Virgo and Leo, I was looking at pictures of one of those ships only a day or so ago and thinking that whilst the aft quarter of those ships is quite well-designed but the whole thing (in my view) is spoiled by those arched windows. I think they look way too fussy and a much simpler shape would have been far more pleasing.

Of the modern beasts, my vote would lean towards Holland America's S-class (Ryndam, Statendam, etc.) They aren't exactly the most eye catching ships, but the design elements harmonize fairly well.

In older active boats, I'd add to the one already mentioned Funchal and Marco Polo. Both once looked better, but they still maintain fairly simple and coherent exteriors that may not be gorgeous, but at least don't hurt the eyes in any way.

There are still cruise liners from the 1970's that are not ugly monsters. MS Boudicca is a superb example with her clipper bow style and great proportions which aren't too high out of the water. The new 'Grand Class' of cruise ships are probably not what the enthusiast would call a proper liner , with 15 decks (plus) above the waterline and only 28Ft draught below holding them up. The naval architects have gone mad....big is definately NOT the best.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the Disney cruise ships - perhaps overblown and a bit gaudy but compared to the other floating barges sailing the oceans today - beautiful to look at.
We have only seen the Disney Magic here in Vancouver so I can't comment on the others.

The Oceanic has been here in Vancouver the last couple of years as the PEACE BOAT, makes me miss the classic liners so much.

Here's one of Oriana running in company with QE2 in the English Channel on 8 July 2007.
