What is that map icon beside the "location" for?
« on: December 15, 2022, 09:09:12 PM »
I click on the map, zoom in to Vancouver, click "use this location" but the location displays just "Canada", which is a bit of a broad location :-).
Any thoughts?

I've found doing that does not provide a named location. Try entering the name of the place in the location box. ShipSpotting does not always use what you think is the proper name. Enter the first few letters first, not the full name, to see if something recognizable comes up.

Meanwhile I got word back:

This "Pick location on map" is intended for when a port/location is not available or applicable.
For example, for photos in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean or near the coast of a country but not near a port/location.
As such it only selects an Ocean or a Country name if located in its territory.

So only to be used in special occasions, and not for normal uploading.

I was looking for a wreck but I cannot remember the name which I think was in Lanzarote. I went to the photo search but Lanzarote and it's port, Arrecife, don't appear in the listing. Most perplexing

Arrecife, Spain, is there.

If you are searching, go to Advanced Search. Select "Spain" in Country. Then select Arrecife from the "Port" drop-down list. (I found 7 photos tagged Arrecife, but none were wrecks.)

If you want to add Arrecife as a location to a photo submission, start typing Arr... in Location and it will pop up. (Don't try to input the full name at once.)

MattB, if you search for IMO 5354896, you will find several photos of a wreck at Arrecife. It is the TELAMON.
