Japanese ferries URASHIMA lost in typhoons 1987
« on: November 30, 2022, 07:34:35 PM »
Yes 1987! In that year Lloyds Casualty records URASHIMA 198gt built 1976 as foundered Okinawa 30/8/1987 and later scuttled (unknown date) and URASHIMA MARU 191gt built 1971 foundered Okinawa 26/10/1987. The Casualty reports have no IMO record, only tonnage and year built.
Leading up to this period I can locate URASHIMA (IMO7608227) and URASHIMA MARU (IMO7115397) with the same tons/built data as above.
Equasis has the date lost 30/8/1967 for URASHIMA MARU and IMO7608227 belonging to a ship CLEMER 38 (ex-Island Express V) 219gt built 1976 active in the Philippines. Marinetraffic shows URASHIMA as its first name.
I have seen photos on ShipSpotting.com of ISLAND EXPRESS V (taken 2020) and URASHIMA (taken 1995) which appear to be of the same vessel.
The last Lloyds Register entries for both names/IMO numbers is 1987.
Does anyone have any more infomation on the Lloyds reports and when was URASHIMA salvaged if CLEMER 38 is indeed 7608827.
