'Forbidden'.... why is it so?
« on: March 05, 2021, 07:15:32 AM »
I live in 'the bush' and don't have fibre optic to the node...whatever that may be.
My normal way of aquiring internet involves a dish on the roof.... from there my bits and bobs go to the 'Skymuster' satellite and it comes to earth somewhere in Sydney and carries on its merry way.

Twice I have been locked out of this site...getting this.... 'Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.'

Its currently been going on for three or four days. No other sites affected... just Shipspotters.
If I use my phone  as a hotspot - as I am just now -  it goes via a tower on a nearby hill and is fine.

Any thoughts?
Cheers
Frank

Sorry to hear about this, Frank
I do not think that this is anything that Shipspotting is doing.  Sounds like an issue with either your browser or the servers feeding your saztellite.  But I have drawn this to attention of our IT in case they have any insight.

Hello Frank,

This is likely due to your internet service provider blocking the Shipspotting website. It means their servers sees the site, but their access to the site is forbidden.

It is most likely because Shipspotting is unsecured (i.e. HTTP instead of HTTPS) and your ISP doesn't want their infrastructure exposed to unsecured sites.

You can read further about this error here:
https://www.allconnect.com/blog/403-forbidden-error-explained

Using a VPN should solve this problem, and we should all be using VPNs more often.

Regards,
Heinu

The HTTPS encryption feature was addressed in a separate forum topic (Is there a site problem?). Based on numerous comments contained in that topic, it was my understanding at the time that a transition to HTTPS was targetted for late summer/early autumn (2020) implementation. Presumably this change is still on IT agenda....?

I have asked IT yet again what the schedule is for the long-overdue change to https.

IT have confirmed that we will have https with the revamped site that was envisaged a year ago.  Work was done on that and it will still happen, but like so many things, that project has had a few setbacks during the past 12 months.

As if by magic.... with no intervention at all on my part... life is back to normal... another great unsolved mystery of the sea...

It may be blocked from the mobile phone network used as a hotspot.
