Going to be in GIB for two days later this month. Any top tips where best to go or be located to view large commercial vessels within 400mm lens range. Are there any harbour/bay boat trips? Thank you.

Well Piet with a 400mm lens you should be pretty ok.
I definitely would take the walk to 'Europa point', i.e. the southern tip where you have an open view of the strait and the entrance of Gibraltar Bay. You just have to be lucky that there is not to much haze.
Cheers,
Roy

If you ae lucky to stay at the Rock Hotel a number of the rooms have balconies facing the Bay. The panoramic vista that opens out before you is staggering. They have a a couple of PCs in a computer room to go onto whatever AIS based internet program you use. Marinetraffic, fleetmon, vesselfinder, shiptracking etc...
A good position to go to is the Cable Car to the top of the Rock. There is a cafe there and the apes get fed up there IIRC. This position there are excellent views over the eastern anchorage. Be aware of the ape poo!!
You can get out onto the bay by getting a ticket to board one of the dolphin boats [dolphin adventure dolphin safari] both have internet web sites and you can purchase tickets on it. So you can not only look at the marine life ... when it pops up, but also get some excellent photograpphs of the varoious ships moored in the bay.
I use a Canon EOS 700D with a 100-400mm lens

Thanks for the information and advice. Stayed in the Rock Hotel which probably provides the best possible views of the anchorage. Over 43 vessels seen in the anchorage on the first day - mainly bulkers and large tankers bunkering - but also a few cruise ships and general cargo vessels. Also quite easy to identify vessels going into Algeciras but too far away to get decent photographs. In two days over 120 ocean going ships logged. Highly recommended. And the sun was shining and the beer was cheap!
