Where are the best places to see container ships and tankers in SE England?

Thanks

Hi Isaac,

For container ships Felixstowe is Britains major port. Good views can be had from the View point at Felixstowe of passing ships. Most of the berthed ships can be seen from opposite either at Shotley or Harwich. Small tankers frequent both Ipswich and Harwich and must pass felixstowe on there way in or out and can also be observed from Harwich.

best regards

Derek

Isaac,

As far as tankers are concerned, Gravesend is a good convenient point to observe those going to Purfleet and Grays. Turnover is pretty frequent. This is also a good spot to see container ships going to Tilbury.

For tankers on the South Coast, take the Southampton-Cowes car ferry as this passes Fawley where there are usually 3 or 4 berthed plus bunkering tankers in Southampton. You may even get lucky and see one at Hamble (on the opposite side to Fawley) And of course you have container ships at Southampton too, although you will need to be on land to observe these unless you get lucky and see one on the way in or out.

Hope this helps

Andrew

To see ships of all types no better place than St Margarets Bay Kent by the Dover Patrol Memorial.
On a clear day shipping easily seen on both sides of the Channel and easily identified with AIS.
Bit distant for photography though.

Margate is good, ramsgate has had its first car transporter arrive and depart this last week, and of course dover is a good day out. as the poster above says both sides of the channel can be seen, it all depends what things your after,
