RITSKE - a cement carrier?
« on: January 06, 2016, 06:33:58 PM »
Hi all,

came across Ritske (IMO 8913473) today (see the link below for a sample photo)
http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2262834

Miramar says that in 2005 this one was converted from cargo to cement carrier, but she still looks like a cargo ship to me.

Can anyone enlighten me about this?

kind regards,
Jens

Yes Jens RITSKE is indeed a cement carrier but the tanks are in the old hold so it still looks like a general cargo vessel. She often calls at Great Yarmouth delivering the powders and minerals [loosely described as cement] to companies engaged in the North Sea drilling industry.
Hope this helps  Regards Andy [TX2]

Hi Andy,

thanks for the explanation. So the conversion was necessary because as a "normal" general cargo ship she wouldn't have been suitable to carry the powders and minerals in her holds?

Equasis still has her listed as "general cargo" and I can't quite decide which category is the right one ???

kind regards,
Jens

Hello Jens,
Ritske was indeed converted to a cementtanker with tanks in her cargoholt.
But in september 2015 the tanks are removed and put in the cargoholt of mv LELIE (9166443)
So Lelie is now a cementtanker and named LELIE C to replace Ritske .
Ritske has been sold as general cargoship in november 2015 to St.Kitts flag as Framfjord

By the way,  BORNHOLM (9361354) and GOTLAND (9361366), are also converted to cementtankers

2 Norwegian vessels, NORBAR and COMABAR are also equipped with tanks in the holds. They have tanks for liquid and dry-powder. The hatch-covers are permanently closed, haven't been opened for years. All loading and discharging are carried out through manifolds on the side of hatches. Like RITSKE they are sailing between oilbases, mainly in Norway, but sometimes also Scotland and Denmark. It is not cement they are carrying as dry-powder, but baryte, which are used on the oilfields.

In my knowledge Cebo-Marine has nothing to do anymore with Framfjord ,they just sold the ship.
But I don't know who the new operator is.
Cebo-Marine has yet another ship in her fleet.
Rhoon (9226164) was converted with cementtanks in march 2010 and renamed RHOON-C .
C stands for Cebo ( CEmentBOuw )

Just as an aside to the thread, it could quite easily be delivering cement to the oilfields. Oilwell cement (aka API Class G) is used in large quantities by the oil industry. It is a highly specialised product designed to set in the high temperatures and pressures to support the structure of the drill hole.
Regards,
Hans
