"Hyundai Fortune" has reportedly sunk, taking the full cargo of containers with her.

I am quite certain this would be the first time ever a big containervessel sinks.

Best regards
Mats

There seems to be some doubt that she has actually sunk. To quote Tradewinds on-line:

A report from the Yemeni state news agency Saba had said the 5,550-teu Hyundai Fortune (built 1996) had sunk 130 nautical miles off Aden following the blaze on Tuesday, but no confirmation of this could be obtained on Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesman from hyundai merchant marine has told Lloydslist that the vessel is still afloat and salvage tugs are due to arrive on the scene late afternoon london time.
The plan will be to get the fire under control then tow the striken vessel to a nearby port for full inspection.
the vessel was left Singapore last week and was boand for Rotterdam.

Really bad news for all parties concerned. It looks like the vessel is still afloat from what I last heard and is still burning at this time.
One question, who are the owners of this vessel? Does Ofer's zodiac shipping UK own her like some other HMM boxships or is she still owned by HMM korea?

Thanks,

Milind

Casualty type: Fire - containers lost overboard

Voyage from/to: Far East ports to Europe

Casualty Date: 21.3.2006

Vessel Type: Container vessel

Grt: 64054

Built: 1996

Cargo: Containers

22.3.2006 - Update
We are already instructed by a number of cargo interests.

Rumours of the vessel sinking are, we understand, untrue.

Salvors are still en route but the fire has now spread from the stern to forward of the accomodation block. More cargoes will be a CTL as a result.

The vessel has 5100 TEU on board and it appears the fire and explosion started in the cargo space to the stern of the vessel. There is currently a gaping hole in the hull above the waterline.

It appears early reports of a possible terrorist attack are unlikely to be true.

We have retained an experienced fire expert to attend on site once the vessel has been salved. This will be important in order to determine the risks and dangers endured by salvage services (with a view to challenging salvors
Container :-D  8-)  :-x:hammer:

Thanks Klaus. I wonder if the company you mentioned is one of Ofer's many shell companies around the world.

She's not an Ofer ship. She's fully owned and managed by HMM, Korea. The Panamanian company is a single purpose entity of HMM.

Thanks for the information phil. The Tradewinds picture I saw today shows the vessel to be in really bad condition now. The hull looks to be severely damaged on the aft port side and the accomodation is starting to burn as well.
I guess it looks hopeless for her now especially if the Engine Room is damaged beyond reasonable repair. However, if for some reason she is salvageable, then rest assured Sammy Ofer will try to get a good deal on the hull just like the 'LIMBURG' and 'HANJIN PENNSYLVANIA'!
