Just saw this on the news

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-25696127

Does anyone else get as irritated as I do at the fact that our esteemed news media seem to be utterly incapable of reporting ship names? I sometimes feel that they aren't even aware that they actually have names.

Anybody know which vessels are involved?

According to AIS, one of the ships involved seems to be RICKMERS DUBAI.

Thanks Yvon,

I got there just before I read your post  :)

Still don't know what the tug was though.

Found the following on the Mail news page.. An investigation was under way tonight after a 21,000-tonne bulk carrier was in collision with an unidentified vessel in the English Channel, coastguards said.

The captain of the Panamanian-registered carrier, called the Southern Star, contacted Dover Coastguard to report he had been in collision with another ship.

The Southern Star, with 23 people on board, was not thought to be taking on water but was drifting 20 miles north of Dunkirk, where the collision happened.

A Dover Coastguard spokesman said: "The other vessel involved appears to be steaming from the scene. It is possible the captain of the ship is not aware of the collision but that is very unlikely."          John D

A salvage tug operated jointly with coastguards in France was being sent from Deal in Kent to the Southern Star. Meanwhile Dover Coastguard was hoping to make contact with the unidentified ship as it passed along the Dover Straits.

It is not thought anyone was injured in the incident.

I noted the Rickmers Dubai anchored a few miles off Newhaven this afternoon which I thought a bit odd at the time, Now all becomes clear!

I am not sure about other collisions but the Tug Kingston had been towing a barge. For some reason the barge dropped its anchor with the Kingston standing by. This was off Dungeness. A lifeboat was stood by for some eight or nine hours, this was relieved by Dover Lifeboat. The THV Galatea headed down to the barge I believe intending to cut the barges anchor cable so it could continue on its journey. I picked up this info over VHF to Dover Coastguards & Lifeboats. I don't know if the barge had been in collision before or after this incident, certainly there was no traffic about it up top about 1700 last night.

As a quick update I drove through Newhaven yesterday evening. One vessel, couldn't indentify as it was dark, is indeed anchored off of Newhaven coast, albeit VERY close to the shore.

It was too dark to take a photograph but if anyone is interested head to Seaford seafront not Newhaven as it is more easily viewed from there.

I have to admit that I was rather surprised to see such a large vessel off of Newhaven...it's about ten times the usual size of vessel harboured there, but this news explains it. Thankfully no injuries or worse.

Strange Information policy :-(
No data on Southern Star from Panama found, nor on tug Kingston. Only an RNLI report with a photo:
