Twelve missing in Indonesia ferry accident

Twelve people are missing after a passenger boat sank in eastern Indonesia, a rescue official said.

"We have rescued 18 people out of 30 people who were missing," Kupang search and rescue chief Herman Da Gomes said.

He said the passenger boat, called Karya Terang, sank because of strong wind and waves in East Nusa Tenggara province.

"We stopped searching for the rest of the missing people tonight because of bad weather. We will resume the rescue tomorrow," he said, adding that the ferry had been heading from Palue island to the Maumere area.

The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands is heavily dependent on maritime services but its safety record is poor, and fatal accidents are common.

An oil tanker sank on Thursday at a port on Laut island, south of Borneo, while attempting to load marine oil fuel.
