xVAS F.A.Q.
« on: August 27, 2008, 09:43:22 PM »
As sometimes I receive PM or mail of Spotters who want to know how xVAS works, how xVAS get updates, how I collect pictures, ecc, ecc, I open this topic (after a suggestion of Derek and CaptKen) to answer to all questions or doubts about my system.

Here the first, perhaps the most interesting for Spotters, answer: I try to explain you how I work.
Every day (almost) I spend some hours to navigate SSP. I choose a Spotter (random) who granted me his permission and I go to his SSP page.
I look his photos one by one and for each I search in SSP the same ship, so I can see all picts of a vessel available in SSP.
Then - among picts of the ship from Spotters who granted me their permission - I choose the best.
'best' is a personal concept, but usually I choose the most recent one, where the ship is clearly visibile (and close).
I prefer picts with water all around.
When I choose a pict, I assign the copyright in the database and I save it.
After my work, my wife (more expert than me in image management) straighten (if needed), cut and resize picts and upload them to xVAS.

regards to all
Angelo

hello Bulkerman,
the access to the "spotters edition" of xVAS is free for all Spotters who grant me the permission to show their pictures.
I saw that you don't have pictures posted on SSP, but I can open an account for you if you grant me your permission for your future shoots.
regards
Angelo

I'm proud about your words, Jesper.
However I want to thanks all the Spotters, like you, for the help.
Without your photos xVAS should be a boring list if data.
With them it's unique. In the world.
As you saw I reached a big number of photos, more than 51000.
But there are more than 100000 vessels waiting for a photo.
I cannot continue to search new Spotters disturbing them with my tedious messages, so I pray you and all the friends (already xVAS contributors) who read this message to help me to "recruit" new friends.
best regards and thanks again
Angelo

Hello Bulkerman
I am not a professional at any photography and in support of Angelo I have used XVAS.IT for some considerable time now.
Where it is most usefull is if you know a ship is visiting your river and you do not know what it looks like or how big it is, or who owns it, or what flag then this is where Xvas is helpfull as Angelo has a large data base.
Just log in, enter ships name in 'search' and click!
Yes I do have a password to enter the site but it is the same password every time to enter so never had a problem.
Once I did have a problem and Angelo sorted it in hrs.
One tip when looking for a ship on the site make sure you have the ships name spelling correct!
Hope this helps

Regards
Mike :-)
