Pirates foiled
« on: February 12, 2009, 06:35:49 AM »
Lloyds is this morning reporting that an attempt was made yesterday to hijack the products tanker Polaris off Somalia.
The pirates thew a ladder on to the tanker but the tanker's crew threw the ladder back over the side. A US warship, USS Vella Gulf, was in the area and they chased and arrested the pirates who will now be landed in Kenya to face trial there.
As far as I can determine, the tanker is literally brand new; it appears to have been the Marshall Islands flagged Polaris, IMO 9388235. This vessel doesn't yet appear on Equasis but Intertanko shows it was delivered from the builders in Korea 12th January.
