Liverpool Container Port
« on: March 20, 2007, 07:03:23 PM »
According to a BBC news report, Liverpool is set to become the UK's "major gateway for container trade with the United States". I thought it already was but there you go!
The port is going to spend

Kelvin,
It would'nt surprise me if the BBC had made one or two error's in their report! it would'nt be the first time they gave false details in a report about the marine industry!

The report refers to the 'river wall' at the 'Gladstone River entrance' ie: the Gladstone Lock. The container terminal is officially the 'Royal Seaforth Container Terminal' but is commonly known as RSCT or Seaforth

It is true that Liverpool is enlarging it's container terminal, planning permission has been granted and Peel holdings are the owners.

Try this link and it will give you a good idea.

Hope this helps. :-)

Thanks for the link.
The good news is I wasn't going potty; there is no Gladstone River!
The bad news is Peel Holdings.
It seems they are going to keep the dredgers busy; checking on a chart just now I saw that a line joining the entrance to the Gladstone Lock to the corner of the Royal Seaforth riverside wall will leave a bottom of between 2m and 6m until some distance from the wall where it drops to 12m, although I suppose it is possible that putting a wall there will cause the river to scour the bottom itself as the water goes rather quickly through that patch.
Cheers
Kelvin
