SS America/SS United States idea
« on: August 21, 2021, 10:53:16 PM »
I had a idea. Why not go to Fuerteventura and salvage the funnel of the SS America from the seabed and airlift it to the SS United States and place it on the bow. That way when the SS United States is restored, so will a piece of SS America. William Francis Gibbs's relics can live on!

Edit: Yes I have a photo concept, here it is. Images used from Wikipedia.

Considering how the wreck of SS America gradually disintegrated on the beach, I doubt there's anything left of the funnel in the seabed.

What do you expect the funnel to look like today? Just a bit paint, and it's fine again? There will hardly be anything left.

Come on, it's not a bad idea. Imagine the SS United States refurbished in New York and having the refurbished funnel of SS America on her bow. I think the funnel is intact, so there may a chance to recover it and restore the United States before its too late.

Look funny with the funnel on the bow! Besides the AMERICA's funnel was much smaller.

I think the funnel is intact...

After falling down from considerable height, the funnel has been submerged in the same surf zone that demolished the wreck for about 15 years. I'd be surprised if you could tell the funnel apart from other scrap in the seafloor.

First of all funnels are mostly made up of much more thin metal being on top of the vessel so as not the ship to be top heavy, they are the first parts that fall off and disintegrate when a ship sinks, take a look at sunken vessels...and even if such an idea could materialize ,the placing of a funnel on the bow of a graceful liner would be like placing a moustache on a lovely female model.
