U.S. Navy to patrol Somilia's territorial waters
« on: April 19, 2006, 05:30:51 PM »
The U.S. government has reached an agreement with the "transitional" governmnet of Somalia (which seems to be located in Kenya) to have the U.S. Navy patrol the Somaila coast in Somili territorial waters.  Somalia which has no government has not had a coast guard or navy since 19991.  Piracy has dramatically increased with 35 incidents reported in 2005.

Pirates have attacked ships carrying food aid to Somalia and have hampered drought relief efforts.

Pirates in Somalia's central regio currently are holding 3 vessels, including an United Ariab Emirates registered oil tanker and a Korean fishing vessel.  The Korean vessel was licensed by the transitional government to fish in Somali waters.

An international force of naval vessels has been operating in international waters off Somalia.
