Decommissioned frigate identification
« on: September 20, 2011, 06:05:48 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone know the name of the frigate that was towed out of Devonport today heading for Portsmouth.
She was bought down to Plymouth Sound by the tugs SD Faithful, SD Careful plus one other and the tow was handed over to tug Vortex. Weather was dull and damp so identifying her was difficult.
It was not Campbeltown because she is still in Devonport.

Excuse poor quality of photos but weather was bad.

Regards

Bob

Hi,

SeaWaves site shows "Ex-HMS CHATHAM" due Portsmouth 21.09.11 "under tow".  Might be what you saw ??

Why not take a look at my blog "SHIPS AND BOATS IN LONDON". It's my take on the river traffic in the City.

Hi Guys

No unusual arrivals on 21st shown on Portsmouth QHM website, except tug Compass bringing in a couple of small Army work boats from Southampton.   May be they'll anchor at Spithead and come in Thursday a.m.

Thanks guys, looks like its the Chatham, there were three others in Devonport but only managed to identify the Campbeltown. Pity the weather was so bad, would have made a good photo.

Hi Bob

You may get your chance of a photo yet, as once the Vortex has dropped off Chatham in Portsmouth she is heading back down to Plymouth to pick up the Campbeltown to take to Portsmouth.

Hope this helps

James

Thanks James, unfortunatly I was only visiting (working) Plymouth for a couple of days but will be back in a couple of weeks. I did manage to get a half decent shot of Vortex through the rain though.

If anyone is round Portsmouth tomorrow (Thursday) I have heard that HMS Chatham is due to arrive about 07.00 ish and HMS Exeter is due out at about midday in tow of tug Compass.

Hi Bob,

QHM hedging bets on Exeter, she is shown as leaving both today and tomorrow !!.  Campbeltown is now shown as being towed into Portsmouth on Sunday.

Thanks Allan, I might even be able to get to Portsmouth on Sunday morning.
Saw the Campbeltown in Devonport on Tuesday looking very run down, I wonder what the tug will be?
