Another hijacking off Somalia
« on: April 03, 2007, 08:47:40 PM »
Another vessel has been hijacked in Somali waters as fears grow over an escalating humanitarian crisis in the lawless East African country.
The Indian vessel, named in various news reports as Nimatulah and N'imatullah, with 14 Indian crew members onboard was seized off the coast of the capital Mogadishu late on Monday night.
A report from the Associated Press (AP) claims that the 14 member crew of the ship were overpowered by around 10 pirates who approached in a speedboat brandishing rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles.
The vessel had set sail from Dubai and was chartered by a Somali business man to deliver unspecified goods to the country. It is understood the charterer has established communication with the hijackers but there is no word of any demands or ransom as yet.
The hijackers are believed to be moving the vessel towards the northeastern region of Puntland.
The latest hijacking comes barely five weeks after a World Food Programme (WFP)-chartered vessel was hijacked off the war-torn country
Best regards
Bj
