Shipping News and information / "Ocean Ships"
« on: April 13, 2020, 11:18:57 AM »
Some good news in these troubled times.
I am advised that Crecy Publication will issue the 18th edition on 30th October 2020.
This is confirmed on their website.
Not sure how the current situation will affect that but at least a silver cloud

All new entries will be in capitals and I will slowly get gound to changing existing entries
All the best in these stressjul times
Everybody keep well

Help and Advice / IMO Numbers
« on: October 10, 2019, 11:29:55 AM »
I am sure this must have been asked before, but is there a NUMERICAL list of IMO numbers?
I have a photo where the name of the vessel is obscured as are the last 3 digits of the IMO number.
It would be so much easier to plough through a few hundred numbers than thousands.
Any ideas?

Does anyone know what is happening about the next edition of this great book?
I heard a rumour (not sure where) that Ian Allen were no konger going to publish it.
It would be a great shame to lose this valuable source of material

Help and Advice / Inland tankers with ENI & IMO numbers.
« on: August 05, 2019, 07:42:31 AM »
Is this possible?
For instance; inland tanker "Texas" is shown as IMO 9295309 AND 06004033.
However, when I search on my old Lloyds Register CD or on Equasis, the IMO number is invalid.
Please claify

Many thanks for that clarification.
If I find two different numbers, I will use the ENI.

Help and Advice / EU or ENI
« on: August 03, 2019, 08:45:32 AM »
It does not seem to happen often but I was about to post "Francisca" when I noticed on Binnenvaart that when I searched under 06004256, the resulting vessel had a differnet EU number (02321408)
What is the differene and do we stick to ENI on the submission page?

Russell Judge

I do not have so many photos as others as I normally add mine only if there are 10 or fewer of that ship on site. Thus I sometimes submit a photo that is maybe not up to standard but because of it's rarity value. So, I an kind of upset if deleted but in 95% of cases, I agree with the deletion on quality lines.
So, as others have said, get over it and go and photo the ship again but better!

I am not sure that the time of year makes a lot of difference as far as heat is concerned as it is so near the Equator.
As far as rainfall is concernd, I went in May and had no rain at all.
I stayed on Sentosa Island at the Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa and the view was fantastic, looking out over the Western anchorage. You will probably need to be on floor 5 or above to be above the trees.
However it is NOT CHEAP
Be sure to take the ferry to Kusu Island from Marina South but do not miss the last boat back at 16:00 Mon-Fri, 16:30 on Sat & 18:15 on Sundays and holidays. There are few facilities on the island so you may want to take food and water with you.
Have a great time

Help and Advice / Ship Spotting Locations west of Piraeus
« on: December 07, 2018, 04:18:36 PM »
I have spent a couple of days each year in and around the harbours west of Piraeus but am a little confused about the naming.
For instance Elefsina, Elevsis, Eleusis & Elefsis all appear to be the same place but is the shipyard in Elefsina as shown on Google,Michelin & Nakas Road maps or Eleusis as used on Shipspotting?
I know it is a matter of translation from the Greek alphabet but surely there must be standard.
In addition what do we put as the location of the old drill ships and heavy lift vessels in the bay? Is it where the ships are or from where the photo was taken?
Any help most appreciated so I can record the correct place when uploading.

Many thanks for that information. It did seem odd but now it's explained, it makes sense.

All photos of this vessel (including mine) appear to show a stern ramp.
Why? Surely it just goes into the engine room. Why would a parcel tanker need one?
Has it been converted from something else?
Just curious

My favourite place in Maasvlakte is by the "Smickel Inn" where all incoming & outgoing trafic passes.
It is a long way round but worth it. The snack bar there does good basic food and drink but is closed Mondays and Tuesdays
The other place mentioned is the Landtong (where there is now also a cafe) The "hill" there gives good views of the ore berths and Europoort. In addition all the tankers on the Calandkanaal are really close.

Trip reports / Re: Advice Portsmouth / Rotterdam / Kiel Canal
« on: July 20, 2018, 11:29:54 AM »
I have spent quite a few times in Rendsburg on the Kiel Canal.
There is a nice hotel (Hotel ConventGarden)on the North bank. However, my place of choice is on the South side at Osterronfeld which can be accessed from a foot tunnel from next to the above hotel. Turn East out of the tunnel and head for Am Kanal where you will find a restaurant with rooms : - Kanal-Cafe Ask for bedroom overlooking the canal and enjoy!

Trip reports / Ship spotting in Antwerp
« on: July 07, 2018, 11:13:30 AM »
I am a little surprised that this has not been raised before but there are MAJOR roadworks on Scheldelaan north of Lillo. In fact, when I was there 3 weeks ago, the road was shut completely northwest bound. I know there is little north of Lillo other than the Zandvliet/Brendrecht locks but if, like me, you leave Antwerp this way heading for Rotterdama you cannot. In addition coming south to the locks, do NOT miss the single lane exit right marked "Lillo". I did and had to backtrack about 5km in order to do a U-turn.
According to a local friend, there isstill 2 years to go!
